In her first major story, she is a personal predator targeting Peter Parker; in The End of the Spider-Verse, she returns with a plan to turn the Web of Life and Destiny into a hive under her control. Spider-Man and the other Spider-Heroes ultimately stop her.
What is Shathra?
Shathra is a spider-wasp creature from the Astral Plane and one of Spider-Man’s enemies. Her connection to Peter begins after his encounter with the Great Weaver, a totemic spider god. Marvel’s account of her history says the Weaver’s choice of Peter as its earthly avatar draws Shathra’s attention and leads her to hunt him.
That origin places her in Spider-Man’s supernatural, totem-related stories rather than his more familiar street-level conflicts. Her role grows over time: she begins as a dangerous pursuer of Peter, then becomes an adversary seeking control over Spider-Totems and the multiversal web that connects them.
What are the Web of Life and Destiny and the Great Nest?
The Web of Life and Destiny is the network at the center of the Spider-Verse stories, connecting Spider-Totems across realities. A publisher-distributed The Spider-Verse reference-book sample describes Neith as the creator of the Web and Shathra as Neith’s wasp-goddess sister. In that account, Shathra resents the attention Neith receives and wants to replace the Web with the Great Nest, a hive she can centrally control.

The difference is more than a change of name. The Web connects Spider-Totems; Shathra’s Great Nest represents her attempt to bring them under her authority and remove their freedom. This mythology explains why her later campaign threatens many Spider-Heroes at once, rather than only Peter.

How does Shathra first fight Peter Parker?
Shathra’s first major arc is in Amazing Spider-Man (1999) #46–48, following Peter’s Great Weaver encounter in issue #42. The arc was written by J. Michael Straczynski, drawn by John Romita Jr., and inked by Scott Hanna. Shathra initially overwhelms Peter with her strength, speed, agility, teleportation, and stingers. Doctor Strange warns him about spider-wasps, and Peter eventually lures Shathra into the path of an oncoming subway train.

She then changes tactics. Disguised as Sharon Keller, she appears on television and undermines Peter publicly, putting pressure on his relationship with Mary Jane as well. When Peter confronts her at the studio, Shathra returns to her true form and paralyzes him.
Ezekiel Sims takes Peter to a temple in Ghana dedicated to the Great Weaver. Peter acts as bait while Ezekiel summons a swarm of spiders. They envelop Shathra and carry her into the temple. Marvel’s retrospective summary implies a grisly fate there, but does not establish more detail than that.

What happens when Shathra returns?
The Kaine confrontation
Shathra next appears in Scarlet Spider (2011) #24–25. Kaine, Peter’s clone and the Scarlet Spider, faces her while protecting his friends in Houston. After transforming into the Other, Kaine defeats her through overwhelming force. This is a later encounter, but her multiversal ambitions become central in her 2022 return.
The multiversal campaign
Marvel’s retrospective account places Shathra’s reemergence in Edge of Spider-Verse (2022) #1, followed by Spider-Man (2022) and the “End of the Spider-Verse” storyline. She sets her sights on Spider-Heroes across the multiverse, influences Spider-Man Noir, and again uses Sharon Keller as a disguise.

The reference-book sample describes how the larger crisis begins: Spiderling is rebuilding the Web of Life and Destiny when she accidentally summons Shathra. Shathra uses Spider-Wasp Venom to recruit Spider-Totems into her hive mind and sends them to transform the Web into the Great Nest. The same account describes a Totem Dagger that can sever victims from the Web, with consequences for reality. These elements make her later threat a campaign to remake the Spider-Verse, not simply a rematch with Peter.

Marvel’s Spider-Man character-history summary says Shathra begins remaking the multiverse as a single hive, but Peter defeats her by aiming a Great Web-Shooter at her and sending her to another ethereal plane. The broader resolution in the reference-book sample includes the Spider-Heroes’ fight against her and the restoration of heroes harmed by the Totem Dagger.

In that account, Morlun turns against Silk with the dagger, releasing Spider-Totems he had consumed. Neith gives Araña a talisman, which is used to restore heroes affected by the dagger. The result is that Shathra’s attempt to replace the Web with the Great Nest is stopped and the Web is restored.
