Her comic-book presence is very limited, according to the series’ creator and showrunner, Jac Schaeffer. On the show, Rio and Agatha Harkness share a past romantic history, and Rio’s true identity is revealed later in the series. The comics do not give her a established biography that the series adapts, so any link between Rio and Agatha should be read as a story told on screen, not as settled Marvel Comics continuity.
What the comics establish about Rio Vidal
Very little, and that is the most important point for readers who want to know whether the television version is faithful to print. In a December 2024 interview with The Credits, published by the Motion Picture Association, Schaeffer said: “Because this character has very little presence in the comics, we were originating from scratch a lot of who she is, and then we were assigned the task of defining witchcraft in the MCU.”
That statement means the series’ version of Rio should not be treated as a faithful adaptation of a well-known comics storyline. It also means that most of what viewers learn about her character comes from the show’s writers rather than from a body of comics they can check against. If you are looking for a Rio Vidal comic arc that explains the series, the creator’s own account suggests you will not find one.
Who Rio Vidal is on the show
On screen, Rio is played by Aubrey Plaza. Marvel’s official series listing, as it appeared in search results during our check, identifies Agatha All Along as a Marvel Television production. We could not open the Marvel page directly, so treat that identification as the listing’s description rather than a page we read in full.

Executive producer Mary Livanos described the show as “all-new, all-original” in an interview with ComicBook.com in 2024. She also explained the connection between the two characters: “It’s clear that they have a complicated past, and what makes, I think, that really interesting is that, because Rio Vidal is a character who has known Agatha in her past, Agatha is a character who keeps her truth very close to the vest.”
The show, in other words, presents Rio as someone who knew Agatha before the events of the series, and it leaves much of their shared history for the audience to piece together.

Spoiler warning: Rio is revealed as Death
Spoiler warning: The following section names the episode 7 reveal about Rio’s identity. Skip ahead if you have not watched that episode.
In episode 7 of Agatha All Along, the series reveals Rio as Death. Schaeffer discussed the reveal in a TheWrap interview published on October 25, 2024, focusing on Agatha’s relationship with death itself. She has described the choice to make Death a figure of flow rather than decay. In a separate post-finale interview with TheWrap, she said: “We didn’t want Death to be destruction. We didn’t want Death to like, walk by things and they wither around her. We wanted it to be an actual flow.”
Rank #3
Those remarks describe the show’s design intentions. They do not show that comics Death is portrayed the same way, and the sources we reviewed do not establish that Rio is the comics personification of Death.
Her relationship with Agatha
In the series, Rio and Agatha have a romantic past that includes intimacy and betrayal. Schaeffer summarized it in a post-finale interview with TheWrap: “How she is with Agatha is a totally different story, because that is their love affair.”
Schaeffer’s broader reading is that Agatha refuses death, is fascinated by it, and has at times manipulated it to protect herself. In that reading, the relationship lets Agatha keep death at a distance while remaining drawn to it. Schaeffer also described Rio as different with Agatha than she is in her role as Death: more petty and vulnerable, and without the upper hand. Those are the showrunner’s interpretations of the characters, and they are best read as her framing rather than as established fact about the characters.
The available interviews do not establish when or how the relationship began. What is confirmed is narrower: the two characters share a complicated past, and the show presents that past as a love affair. Any detailed timeline beyond that remains unconfirmed.

Comics versus the series at a glance
| Question | Marvel Comics | Agatha All Along (television) |
|---|---|---|
| Rio’s presence | Very little, according to Schaeffer (The Credits, December 2024) | A central character played by Aubrey Plaza |
| Her identity | Not established as the comics personification of Death in the sources reviewed | Revealed as Death in episode 7 |
| Relationship with Agatha | No detailed comics storyline established in the sources reviewed | A past romantic relationship, which Schaeffer calls a love affair (TheWrap, 2024) |
| Origin of the characterization | Largely pre-existing material, though limited | Largely originated for the series, per Schaeffer |
The table shows the gap that matters most. Readers who want the television version should treat it as an original story that borrows a name, not as a retelling of comics history.
Where to watch and what to check
A TheWrap post-finale article from 2024 said the complete series was streaming on Disney+ at the time of publication. Streaming availability changes by region and over time, so check the service in your country before planning a viewing.
For readers who want the comics context around Agatha Harkness rather than Rio, that material is a separate question. The creator’s comments make clear that Rio’s comics record is thin, so any comics reading will not explain her story on screen.
