Prakash Kaur was Dharmendra’s first wife. They married in 1954, before he entered films, and had four children: Sunny, Bobby, Vijeta and Ajeita Deol. Dharmendra later married Hema Malini in 1980 while still married to Kaur, according to reporting by The Indian Express and the Associated Press.
Who is Prakash Kaur?
Kaur is known publicly through her marriage to Dharmendra and the family they raised. The available reporting offers little substantiated detail about her early life, education, occupation or day-to-day private life. It does not establish the extent of her household or caregiving role, so the claim that she “held the family together” should not be treated as documented biography.
When did Prakash Kaur and Dharmendra marry?
The Indian Express reports that Kaur and Dharmendra married in 1954. The Associated Press says Dharmendra was married to Kaur before his acting debut in 1960. Their marriage therefore began before his film career.
How many children did they have?
Kaur and Dharmendra had four children: Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Vijeta Deol and Ajeita Deol, according to The Indian Express. Dharmendra also had two daughters with Hema Malini, according to the Associated Press.

“I can understand what Hema is going through. Even she has to face the world, her relatives and her friends. But if I were in Hema’s place, I would not have done what she did. For, as a woman, I can understand her feelings. But as a wife and a mother, I do not approve of them.”
Asked about Dharmendra’s attraction to Malini, Kaur was reported as saying, “Why only my husband? Any man would have preferred Hema over me.” She also challenged the label “womaniser,” saying, “How dare anyone call my husband a womaniser when half the industry is doing the same thing?” Both quotations are attributed to the same 1981 Stardust interview.
