Shingo Takagi is a Japanese professional wrestler whose NJPW career spans top-championship history, changing faction ties and major title programs. To understand his place in the promotion, it helps to separate confirmed championship history from dated faction reporting and a past title match announcement.
Takagi has a place in NJPW’s top-title history
NJPW’s official IWGP World Heavyweight Championship history records Takagi among the title’s champions. That lineage is the authoritative place to confirm his championship standing; this article does not rely on an unsourced reign count.
The NEVER Openweight Championship is another part of NJPW’s championship landscape. The promotion maintains a separate official NEVER Openweight title history, which should be consulted for that belt’s lineage rather than conflating it with the IWGP World Heavyweight title.
His faction status depends on the date
Takagi was associated with Los Ingobernables de Japon. In a feature published June 12, 2025, NJPW described him and Yota Tsuji as former members and reported them as unaffiliated following the faction’s effective breakup. Read that as a snapshot of the situation around that date—not confirmation of Takagi’s current faction or roster status. See NJPW’s 2025 feature on Takagi and Tsuji.

A major title challenge was announced for Wrestling Dontaku 2026
In coverage published April 18, 2026, NJPW presented Takagi as the challenger to Callum Newman for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship at Wrestling Dontaku in Fukuoka on May 4, 2026. The event date has passed. That announcement establishes the scheduled matchup and its build, but not the result; consult NJPW’s official event results before stating who won or what happened afterward.
