Why did Alan Jackson withdraw from Nick Reiner’s case?
Jackson asked to be relieved as Reiner’s lawyer on January 7, 2026, at a hearing where Reiner was expected to enter a plea. The judge approved the change, and Deputy Public Defender Kimberly Greene took over. The plea hearing was postponed.
Outside court, Jackson said: “Circumstances beyond our control and more importantly circumstances beyond Nick’s control have dictated that, sadly, it’s made impossible to continue our representation.” He added that legal and ethical restrictions prevented him from explaining the reasons.

Jackson has not publicly identified the circumstances that led to his withdrawal. Money, strategy or a disagreement should not be treated as established explanations. The Los Angeles Times reported on January 7, 2026 that Jackson had not answered questions about the retainer and included outside legal commentators’ possible explanations; those were speculation, not a confirmed reason.
Did Nick Reiner seek to hire Jackson back?
Yes. An Associated Press report published August 12, 2026, said Reiner was seeking to hire Jackson again. It also reported that Reiner’s siblings would no longer agree to fund his defense. Those later funding details offer context, but they do not establish why Jackson withdrew in January or prove that he returned to the case.

In that August report, the AP said a Los Angeles County grand jury had indicted Reiner, who entered a not-guilty plea. The indictment alleged he was lying in wait; that is an allegation, not a finding of guilt. Prosecutors had not decided whether to seek the death penalty, and a hearing on a trust petition was scheduled for the following week. The report said the petition alleged the trust held at least $1.5 million in assets; that figure was the petition’s claim, not an independently established account of Jackson’s fees or the reason for his withdrawal.
