Neil deGrasse Tyson is an American astrophysicist, author and science communicator who leads the Hayden Planetarium at New York’s American Museum of Natural History. His best-known achievements fall into three areas: institutional leadership of that planetarium, executive science editing and on-camera hosting of the television series Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey, and a long run of popular science books and broadcasts. “Celebrity scientist” is a media label rather than a job title. His institutional biographies describe him as an astrophysicist and science communicator.
Who he is: early life and education
Tyson grew up in New York City and attended the Bronx High School of Science. His official profile says he earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from Harvard and a PhD in astrophysics from Columbia. The American Museum of Natural History biography adds a master’s degree in astronomy from the University of Texas at Austin and dates the Columbia doctorate to 1991.
Astrophysics research
Tyson’s research has centered on stellar evolution and the structure of the Milky Way. The museum and Planetary Society biographies also list star formation, exploding stars and dwarf galaxies among his research interests. These biographies describe his research areas rather than specific discoveries, so this article does not attribute particular findings to him. His scientific work is documented in those research interests and in his institutional roles, not only in his media appearances.
Leading the Hayden Planetarium
Tyson’s central institutional achievement is his leadership of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History. He was the first occupant of its Frederick P. Rose Directorship. The National Academy of Sciences credits him with a key role in the design of the Rose Center for Earth and Space, the museum complex that houses the planetarium.

The start date of his directorship is inconsistent across sources. The museum biography says he became director in 1996, while the National Academy of Sciences says he took over the directorship in 1995. The sources do not explain whether the two years refer to appointment and effective start respectively, so the precise year should be treated as unsettled.
Cosmos and public science media
Tyson’s broadest public reach comes from television. His official profile says he served as executive science editor and on-camera host and narrator for Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey. The series ran 13 primetime episodes beginning in 2014 on National Geographic Channels. The profile states that the series reached 181 countries in 45 languages. These are distribution figures stated by the profile and the National Academy of Sciences’ 2015 announcement; they are not independently measured audience numbers.
