Natalia Grace is a Ukrainian-born adoptee with spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita, a rare form of dwarfism. Her adoption by Kristine and Michael Barnett, the dispute over her age, and the accusations that followed became a widely covered case and the basis for Hulu’s limited series Good American Family, which premiered March 19, 2025. Hulu describes the series as a dramatized retelling, not a factual record. The age question and the conduct of each family member remain disputed in the reporting, and each side’s claims need to be read as claims.
Who Natalia Grace is
Natalia’s diagnosis, spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita, is part of her public story, but the disputes in her case centre on her age, her adoption records, and the conduct alleged within her family, not on the diagnosis itself.

- Apartment and move: TIME reports that Natalia lived in an apartment while the Barnetts moved away. Accounts of her day-to-day circumstances come from Natalia herself or from the documentary account TIME describes.
- Criminal charges: TIME reports that Michael Barnett was acquitted and that charges against Kristine Barnett were dropped. The coverage does not describe the underlying docket or trial transcripts.
The age dispute: what the 2012 order changed
The age question is the most technical part of the case and the easiest to misread. It has two parts that should be kept apart.
The legal change
In 2012, an Indiana court changed Natalia’s legal birth year from 2003 to 1989, according to TIME. The 2003 date is the one used when the Barnetts adopted her in 2010. Under the 1989 date, she would have been about 23 when the order was entered.

What the legal change does not settle
- A court-ordered birth year is a legal record. It is not, by itself, a determination of biological age, and the reporting cited here does not describe any medical or other finding of her biological age.
- The coverage does not reproduce the 2012 order or the court’s reasoning, so the reasons for the change cannot be checked from the reporting alone. Readers who want the primary record would need the order itself or the full Indiana court file.
- Reading the order as proof that Natalia misrepresented her age goes beyond what the reporting establishes. Reading it as proof that the earlier date was correct goes beyond it too.
Competing accounts within the family
Each family member has made serious allegations, and the reporting presents them as competing accounts rather than settled findings.
The Barnetts’ allegations
The Barnetts have alleged that Natalia behaved violently or deceptively. TIME documents these as the Barnetts’ claims, not as established facts.

Natalia’s account
Natalia has described mistreatment within the family and disputes some of the Barnetts’ accounts. Her statements are her own account and should be attributed to her.
What the criminal outcomes decide
Michael Barnett’s acquittal and the dropped charges against Kristine Barnett answer the specific charges in those proceedings. They do not resolve every factual dispute between the family members, and they do not confirm or refute the broader allegations either side has made outside court.

How Good American Family handles the story
Hulu’s press biography describes the limited series as “a dramatized retelling of the real-life story of Natalia Grace” (Hulu press biography, 2025). Creator and co-showrunner Katie Robbins has been direct about the method. In an AP interview published March 18, 2025, she said:
“We were taking all of this research that we had and amplifying certain moments or adjusting certain moments for kind of dramatic license.”

In a TV Insider interview published April 30, 2025, Robbins said the production team worked from depositions, court documents, medical records, social-media messages, and text messages. She also described the switching between perspectives as a deliberate storytelling choice. These statements explain how the series was made. They do not verify each scene against the record, and they do not tell viewers which dramatized moments correspond to documented events.
A separate documentary on the same case
According to AP, the Investigation Discovery documentary series The Curious Case of Natalia Grace covers the same case from a different format. Watching it alongside the drama is useful because the same events can be framed differently. The reporting cited here does not establish that any documentary episode resolves the disputed points.
How to check a claim about the case
Because the series is built around shifting perspectives and dramatic choices, a checklist helps separate what is shown from what is documented.
