Mrs. Kersh in Welcome to Derry is Ingrid Kersh, a human woman and the daughter of Bob Gray. She is not Pennywise: It deceives Ingrid into believing she can reach her father through the clown identity, then uses her as an ally. In It: Chapter Two, by contrast, the elderly Mrs. Kersh who confronts Beverly is It impersonating Ingrid. The distinction—and Ingrid’s earlier meeting with Beverly—connects the series’ story to the film’s frightening scene.
Who is Ingrid Kersh in Welcome to Derry?
Ingrid Kersh is Bob Gray’s daughter. The series gives a human history to the Mrs. Kersh character from It: Chapter Two, a connection showrunner Jason Fuchs said the writers developed from the film scene. Fuchs described the character’s motivation as “The idea that you’d have a character who was driven purely by a love of her dad. It’s all love.” That is his explanation of the writers’ conception, not dialogue spoken in the series. The Nerds of Color’s December 1, 2025 interview with Fuchs discusses the reveal and its creative rationale.
Is Mrs. Kersh Pennywise?
No—not when the series shows Ingrid as a person. Creators Andy and Barbara Muschietti describe Bob Gray as the clown killed by the monster. It takes on the clown identity and lets Ingrid believe she can still find her father through it. Her grief and longing make her vulnerable to the deception, and the creators say It uses her as an ally. In their December 7, 2025 TV Insider interview, the Muschiettis explain Ingrid’s relationship to Bob Gray and her role in the Black Spot events.
“Mrs. Kersh” therefore means different things in different scenes: Ingrid is the human character in Welcome to Derry; the elderly woman Beverly meets in It: Chapter Two is It wearing Ingrid’s appearance. The series does not establish that Ingrid herself is a supernatural transformation or that she is Pennywise.

What does Ingrid do at the Black Spot?
The creators identify Ingrid as the human behind the call that alerts Clint Bowers that Hank Grogan is hiding at the Black Spot. Her action is intended to bring about enough fear and pain to attract It. Ingrid believes that helping create those conditions may let her see her father. The motive comes from the creators’ explanation of her character; it should not be mistaken for an independent supernatural power or for proof that Bob Gray is still alive.

In the series’ 1988 finale, elderly Ingrid is at Juniper Hill when Beverly’s mother dies. Beverly encounters the real Ingrid there before the events of the film. Later, when It appears to Beverly in Ingrid’s form, it draws on that earlier traumatic memory as well as tormenting Beverly about her father. Fuchs explained this link in GamesRadar+’s finale coverage.

The distinction is about both identity and timing: Beverly’s Juniper Hill encounter is with the real Ingrid; her later encounter in It: Chapter Two is with It impersonating Ingrid. The series adds history to the film’s disguise and shows why that face carries a painful memory for Beverly.
