Martin Mull was an American comedian, actor, musician, writer, and painter. The 2026 Netflix documentary Who Is Martin Mull? brings those parts of his career together—and features Bob Saget, who helped direct the film and served as an executive producer. Netflix announced the film for October 7, 2026, and said it was available that day; access may vary by country.

What is Who Is Martin Mull? about?

The documentary follows Mull across comedy, television, music, and visual art, tracing a career that moved from folk clubs to prime-time sitcoms and gallery walls. It pairs Mull’s recollections with memories from friends including Steve Martin, Tom Waits, and David Alan Grier, according to Netflix Tudum.

Netflix lists the film as a TV-MA documentary and names Martin Mull as its star on the official title page. The film is available on Netflix in territories where it is currently offered; check the local catalogue for access.

Why is Bob Saget associated with the film?

Saget appears in the documentary and helped make it: he shared directing duties and was an executive producer. The project began in 2018. After Saget died in 2022, Neil Berkeley took over as director, while the film continued toward completion. Saget’s official site describes the project’s start and his involvement; Netflix’s October 7, 2026 announcement says filming had been underway for three years when Saget died.

The documentary therefore preserves a posthumous on-screen appearance by Saget as part of a project he helped shape. The available official descriptions establish his appearance in this film, but do not establish that it was his final appearance in every medium. The title’s “final on-screen appearance” framing should be understood in connection with this documentary, not as a broader claim about all of his work.

Who was Martin Mull beyond the screen?

Mull’s career crossed disciplines rather than following a single path. He was known as a performer, but painting and music were substantial parts of his work too. He studied painting at the Rhode Island School of Design, earning a BFA in 1965 and an MFA in 1967, according to The Washington Post’s obituary. That training helps explain why the film treats gallery art as part of his story, not simply a side note to his acting career.

Music also features in the documentary’s portrait of Mull, whose recorded work includes albums released across several decades. The film’s official description emphasizes the range of his creative life rather than presenting him only as a television actor.

Who made the documentary?

Netflix credits Bob Saget and Neil Berkeley as directors. Sean Bradley, Tara Billik, and Berkeley are producers; Saget, Kevin S. Bright, Morgan Neville, and Caitrin Rogers are executive producers. The film’s combination of Mull’s own reflections and friends’ recollections places his work in the context of the people who knew and collaborated with him.
