Spoilers for all of The Acolyte. When only the first two episodes had aired in June 2024, viewers suspected that Mae’s seemingly unremarkable ally Qimir was secretly the masked Sith figure directing her. The theory proved right about Qimir’s identity: the series reveals that he is the Stranger. But the finale’s appearance by Darth Plagueis does not establish that Plagueis is Qimir’s master.
Why did fans suspect Qimir was Mae’s master?
The early theory hinged on the gap between Qimir’s apparent role and what he seemed able to do. He initially presented as a low-status trader and Mae’s ally, yet viewers saw signs of unusual fighting ability and knowledge of her targets. He also completed the Sith-coded phrase “peace is a lie” with Mae. Taken together, those clues led some fans to propose that Qimir was not merely helping Mae but was the masked figure behind her mission. Early fan-theory coverage captures that speculation while only the first two episodes were available.
Those details made the theory plausible, not confirmed. At that point, viewers were interpreting clues in an ongoing mystery; the show had not yet revealed the masked figure’s identity.
What does The Acolyte reveal about Qimir?
Later episodes identify Qimir as the masked Stranger and establish him as Mae’s master figure. In a StarWars.com interview, actor Manny Jacinto discusses the character’s “shift into what we call the Stranger” and creator Leslye Headland’s aim of transforming a seemingly low-status character into a powerful one. The reveal vindicates the central early prediction, though the evidence fans had at the time was still circumstantial.

The Stranger’s look and fighting style
The reveal is also built through performance and design. Jacinto describes the Stranger’s movement as quick, powerful, sneaky and fluid, with a style intended to feel distinct from earlier Star Wars fights. Jennifer Bryan’s team created the costume, while Neal Scanlan’s team made the helmet. Jacinto said the mask was difficult to see and breathe in; his hope of owning a replica was a personal remark, not confirmation that a retail version was available.
Does Darth Plagueis turn out to be Qimir’s master?
No such relationship is established by the released season. Darth Plagueis appears in the finale, lurking on the new world Osha reaches. In a StarWars.com post-finale interview, Amandla Stenberg says, “I just freaked out,” describing her reaction to seeing Plagueis revealed. That confirms the finale appearance; it does not identify Plagueis as Qimir’s teacher or explain their connection.

Keep the two questions separate: the series reveals Qimir as the Stranger and Mae’s master figure, while Plagueis’s place in Qimir’s story remains unanswered in the released episodes covered by these sources.
What was The Acolyte trying to do with its Sith-centered mystery?
The series is set in the High Republic era. In a June 4, 2024 Walt Disney Company interview, Headland explained the choice to center a story on Sith characters: “The logical conclusion would be to set this show in a time period where the Sith are the underdogs.” She also described the series as Star Wars from the bad guys’ perspective, combining a darker tone, fun and games, and an intriguing mystery.

That framing helps explain why the show invites viewers to question appearances and follow shifting control and power. Headland has also discussed the narrative appeal of Jedi master-apprentice relationships and spiritual connection in a Nerdist interview; that discussion does not settle Qimir’s Sith lineage.

After the series was canceled, Headland reportedly said a proposed second season would have explored Qimir’s connections to Vernestra Rwoh, Plagueis and sequel-era lore. GamesRadar’s report describes intended story material, not episodes that were made or answers that the first season provides. It cannot be used to treat a Qimir–Plagueis master-and-student relationship as established canon.
