Luce is the official mascot of the Catholic Church’s 2025 Jubilee, unveiled by Archbishop Rino Fisichella on 28 October 2024. Designed by illustrator Simone Legno, she was presented as a pilgrim figure meant to connect the Jubilee’s message of hope and welcome with pop culture popular among young people. Her anime-inspired look quickly prompted fan art, memes and debate online. The phrase “broke the internet” captures the attention she received, but contemporary reports do not establish internet-wide reach or a single cause for her popularity.
Who is Luce?
Luce is the mascot for the 2025 Jubilee and, as Archbishop Rino Fisichella put it at her unveiling, “for Osaka.” That is an event-linked role, not a designation as a permanent mascot for the Vatican or every Catholic institution. The Jubilee’s official announcement names illustrator Simone Legno as her designer and says the character was created to reflect pop culture familiar to younger generations while carrying a message of hope and welcome.
Fisichella described the choice as an effort to enter “the world of pop culture, so loved by our young people.” The Vatican later brought Luce and friends to a pavilion at Lucca Comics & Games, a comics and games fair, as a setting to introduce the mascot and speak with younger generations about hope. That public appearance fits the stated outreach aim; it does not, by itself, establish a broader marketing motive.
What does Luce look like, and what does her design mean?
Luce is drawn in an anime-inspired style as a young pilgrim. Her outfit combines familiar travel gear with explicitly Catholic imagery: a yellow anorak, muddy boots, a missionary cross around her neck and a pilgrim’s staff. The Jubilee announcement says her luminous eyes represent hope in a pilgrim’s heart and a desire for spirituality and connection with the divine.

Fisichella described the details as a visual account of pilgrimage: the jacket protects against the elements, the muddy boots suggest a road already travelled, and the staff marks the pilgrim’s journey. He called the shining eyes “a symbol of the hope of the heart.” The design therefore gives viewers two things at once: a contemporary character style and symbols that tie her specifically to the Jubilee’s religious theme.
Why did Luce spread so quickly online?
The available reporting suggests several plausible ingredients, but does not prove that any one of them caused Luce’s rapid circulation. Her recognizable character design and pilgrimage symbols gave artists and meme-makers easy material to adapt. The Vatican’s choice to introduce her through a comics and games venue also placed her in a pop-cultural context. Within days, people across different online communities were responding in different ways.

On 4 November 2024, Catholic News Agency reported that “hundreds of memes and fan art renditions” had appeared in less than seven days across Facebook, X, Reddit and TikTok. The report described Christian-themed jokes and fan art, as well as activity from Catholic meme communities, amateur anime artists, Protestant meme accounts, and secular and political accounts. That is a contemporary account of early online activity, not a platform-wide audit or a lasting measure of Luce’s popularity.
“Broke the internet” is therefore best read as headline shorthand for a striking burst of attention, not as a verified claim that the whole internet saw or discussed Luce. The reporting documents rapid circulation across multiple communities; it does not quantify total reach or establish a definitive viral mechanism.

Why was the mascot controversial?
The response was not uniformly celebratory. Contemporary coverage also recorded debate about the design and its creator, Simone Legno. Wired Italia discussed the controversy and quoted Legno reflecting on his Catholic upbringing and his hopes for the character. In a statement shared at the unveiling, he said he had learned “the principles of a faith nourished by generosity and respect for others” and hoped Luce and her traveling companions could represent feelings that resonate with younger generations.
That context helps explain the creator’s stated intentions, but it does not make online reactions unanimous or show that criticism had one common motivation. The documented response included both creative participation and debate.
