Luce is an anime- and manga-influenced illustrated character created by Simone Legno. The Holy See presented her as a mascot for the 2025 Jubilee and for Osaka—not as a permanent mascot of the Vatican as a whole. She was designed to connect the Jubilee with pop culture popular among young people.
Who is Luce?
Luce is a fictional illustrated mascot whose visual style draws on anime and manga. In a 28 October 2024 announcement, the Holy See credited the creative work to Simone Legno and described the character as created from a desire to enter “also into the world of pop culture, so loved by our young people.” The Holy See Press Office announcement introduced her alongside cultural events connected with the opening of the Holy Door and the Holy See pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka.
Was Luce the Vatican’s official anime mascot?
Not in the broad, permanent sense implied by that phrase. Archbishop Rino Fisichella presented Luce as “the mascot for the Jubilee and for Osaka.” The Holy See’s announcement also called her “the mascot that will accompany us.” A separate release from the Dicastery for Evangelization called her “the official mascot of the Jubilee,” as well as a “symbol of hope and fraternity.” That release linked those values with the theme of Lucca Comics & Games. The Dicastery’s 28 October 2024 announcement about Lucca Comics & Games records Fisichella’s description of Luce as a symbol of hope and fraternity.
So “the Vatican’s anime girl” works as informal shorthand, but the official role was more specific: she was associated with the Jubilee celebrations in 2025 and with Osaka. The official announcements do not identify her as a standing mascot for the Vatican or the Holy See beyond that context.
