Karen Francis, the stage name of singer, songwriter and instrumentalist Karen Francis Maia, is an artist from Brazil’s North whose music brings R&B and Afrobeats together with African and Afro-Brazilian roots, rap, MPB and gospel influences. Born in Maués, raised in Manaus and reported living in Belém in January 2025, she released her album Anos Luz in 2023. Here, MPB means música popular brasileira—Brazilian popular music—not a political office.

Her regional identity is part of the story she tells about her music. In 2022, after receiving an invitation connected to Primavera Sound São Paulo, she said: “É um momento para fazer o Brasil olhar para a minha cidade, para o meu estado e minha região” (“It is a moment to make Brazil look at my city, my state, and my region”).
What does Karen Francis sound like?
Descriptions of Francis’s music place it across R&B and Afrobeats rather than in a single narrow genre. Her influences include African and Afro-Brazilian music, rap, gospel and MPB. Billboard Brasil described her sound in 2023 as a fusion of afrobeat and Nova MPB, while Pará’s cultural directory identifies Afrobeats and R&B as central reference points.
Rank #2
Her upbringing also informs that mix. Billboard Brasil reported that she grew up in a Christian family, began singing at four, and was encouraged by her Brazilian father and Mozambican mother, both music lovers. The combination of those roots and influences helps explain why “Amazonian” describes more than a place of origin: Francis has also used her platform to direct attention toward her city and region.
What music has she released?
Early recordings
Her early releases include the EP Acontecer (2018) and the live follow-up Acontecer (Ao Vivo) (2021). The Pará cultural directory also lists songs and collaborations including “Cardume,” “Se você ficar,” “Pode Confiar,” “BPM” and “Cinco dias.”
Anos Luz
Released in September 2023, Anos Luz is Francis’s album and contains eight songs, according to Billboard Brasil. The record moves among pop, R&B and Afrobeats. Francis described its themes as love and dreams, alongside the need to change circumstances for Black youth through reparation and justice.
Later catalog entries
Apple Music’s artist catalog lists releases from 2023 and 2024 and “Onmi,” a 2025 collaboration with Arthur da Silva. Catalog listings can change over time. Be cautious with older albums attributed to Karen Francis on other streaming pages: the 1996, 1998 and 2003 entries shown in the Amazon Music catalog are not corroborated by the biographical discography in the Pará directory or the Apple Music listing described here, so they may reflect a same-name catalog mix-up.

Which career milestones are documented?
- Francis performed in the Primavera Sound São Paulo program in 2022.
- The Pará cultural directory records appearances at Primavera Sound, Rio2C, AFROPUNK Bahia and Se Rasgum, among other events; Rádio Nacional also confirms appearances at Primavera Sound and Afropunk.
- The Pará directory reports that she was selected for YouTube’s Black Voices Music initiative in 2023.
These appearances support describing Francis as an emerging or rising artist. The sources cited here do not establish comparable audience, sales or streaming figures, so “rising” is a qualitative description rather than a claim about a measured level of popularity.
