Smurf tells J that Baz is his father, but Animal Kingdom never confirms biological paternity. In the season 6 finale, Julia tells Pope that Baz could be the father and that she does not know for sure. Baz is the answer the family gives, not a fact the show settles.
Who J is in the Cody family
- J is Joshua Cody, the son of Julia Cody and the grandson of Smurf, according to the Warner Bros. Discovery Pressroom character descriptions for the series.
- Julia is Smurf’s estranged daughter and Pope’s twin sister. That makes Pope J’s uncle.
- Baz is adopted into the Cody family. Vanity Fair’s cast interview from June 5, 2016 describes him that way, and it is the only family-tree fact in this article that is not drawn from the show’s own storytelling.
What Smurf tells J
The series opens with J moving in with his grandmother after his mother dies of a heroin overdose, according to the premiere synopsis on TheTVDB episode guide. Smurf later tells J that Baz is his father. That is the answer viewers most often remember, and it is Smurf’s claim, made inside the story.

A character’s assertion is not the same as a confirmed fact. Smurf may believe it, may want it to be true, or may be wrong. The show does not give a test result, a birth record or a second witness that would close the question.
What the finale adds
The season 6 finale includes a flashback that complicates Smurf’s account. In plot summaries of the finale, which Wikipedia’s episode list reflects, Julia tells Pope that Baz could be the father but that she does not know for certain. That is the strongest on-screen qualification in the series, and it comes from J’s own mother rather than from an outside observer.
#1 Best Overall
The finale also reopens the family’s older wounds. TVLine’s recap of the finale, published August 28, 2022, describes Pope remembering that Smurf abandoned Julia while she was pregnant, and it notes that J blames the Codys for his mother’s death. Those events explain why J’s parentage carries emotional weight. They do not establish who his father is.
Why Baz is the name viewers hear
Baz is the most natural candidate for a few reasons. He is a Cody by adoption, Smurf names him as J’s father, and Julia’s uncertainty in the finale still points toward him as a possibility. Shawn Hatosy, who plays Pope, made the family dynamic clear in the 2016 Vanity Fair interview:
“I think Smurf would say she loves Pope more because she’s her biological son; however, her actions indicate Baz is her clear favorite.”
That is a cast member’s reading of Smurf’s behavior toward her sons. It describes the family’s emotional hierarchy, not J’s paternity. The exact on-screen wording of the finale dialogue quoted above is paraphrased from plot summaries, so check the episode if you need a verbatim line.

How to read the answer
- Established on screen: J is Julia’s son, Smurf’s grandson, and Pope’s nephew. Baz is Smurf’s adopted son.
- Claimed in the story: Smurf says Baz is J’s father.
- Left uncertain: Julia says Baz may be the father but does not know for sure, and the show does not resolve the question.
If you are asked who J’s dad is, the accurate answer is that the show points to Baz, and that the story never proves it.
