Isaac Dixon is the hard-line leader of the Washington Liberation Front (WLF), the militia that fights the Seraphites in a ruined Seattle. Jeffrey Wright voiced him in The Last of Us Part II and plays him in HBO’s live-action series. The two versions agree on his role as a brutal WLF commander. They differ on how he got there: the game gives him a former U.S. Marine background, while the show’s second season implies he was a FEDRA commander who turned against the force he served.
Who Isaac is
Isaac leads the WLF, a Seattle militia that opposes the Seraphites, the group the Wolves call “Scars.” He is not a gentle or conflicted ally of the Wolves. He runs a campaign of violence against the Seraphites and is willing to use torture to get information. That shared core is the same in the game and the show, and it is the anchor for everything else about his backstory.
The game’s origin: a former Marine
In the story of The Last of Us Part II as summarized by TIME (Megan McCluskey, May 5, 2025), Isaac is a former U.S. Marine. His rise to WLF leadership comes after the Thursday Market Massacre, when FEDRA troops fired on protesters angry about food shortages in the quarantine zone. TIME also reports that FEDRA had killed the WLF’s founders, Emma and James Patterson, and that Isaac moved into the leadership vacuum that followed.
This is the version most players know. It explains his militarized outlook without making him a former enforcer for the regime he now fights, which is the gap the show chooses to explore.

The show’s expanded origin: a defector from FEDRA
The television series reframes that past. Its second-season material suggests Isaac was a FEDRA commander who defected after witnessing how the force treated Seattle’s civilians. TIME’s May 2025 coverage describes this as an implication of the episode rather than a line that matches the game’s history point for point. Treat it as the show’s own expansion of the character, not a restatement of the game’s canon.
That change matters for the character. In the game, Isaac’s path looks like a soldier who lost his cause and found a new one. In the show, the question is sharper: how does someone who once served an oppressive military authority become an authoritarian militia leader himself? That reading is an interpretation of the reported character change. The show’s creators have not framed it in those exact terms.

What season two shows about Isaac
Spoiler note: This section and the next describe season two and the game’s ending for Isaac.
Season two uses an interrogation scene to introduce Isaac’s methods and to hint at his past. He tortures a Seraphite captive, and the scene is the clearest demonstration in the show of how far he will go. Craig Mazin, the showrunner and co-creator, explained the choice to the Television Academy (interview dated May 23, 2025): “I wanted to communicate that this wasn’t his first rodeo when it comes to torturing people.” The line signals that Isaac’s violence has a history, which is why the show treats his defection story as relevant to how he behaves now.

The game’s ending for Isaac
In the game’s later story, TheWrap (Alex Welch, May 4, 2025) reports that Isaac plans a full-scale assault on the Seraphite island. He also dies off-screen after Abby refuses his demand that she abandon Lev. This is a game spoiler and tells you nothing about how or when the television series will handle his story. TheWrap’s suggestion that Isaac could remain in the show longer than the game allows is a reporter’s inference, not an announced production decision.
What the creators have said about the change
Before season two aired, Jeffrey Wright told TVLine (Kimberly Roots, November 26, 2024) that viewers had asked about a backstory for Isaac. His answer was tentative: “People have asked… whether we’ll get a little bit of a backstory about Isaac? We might.” He added, “It might not be pretty.”

Mazin has described adaptation as a matter of using what each medium can do well: “There are things the game can do that we just can’t do as effectively. But then there are things we can do that [the game] can’t do. And so, we just take advantage of what we have.” That explains why the show expands Isaac’s background instead of copying the game’s account.
Neil Druckmann, Naughty Dog’s studio head and an executive producer, co-creator and writer on the show, addressed whether viewers need to play the game first. In a Sony Interactive Entertainment discussion dated April 25, 2025, he said: “You don’t need to play the game to enjoy the show. That was always important. But if you do, and you watch the show, it will fill in certain gaps for the game.”

What is and is not established
- Established: Isaac is the WLF leader in both the game and the show, Jeffrey Wright performs him in both, and the two versions give him different origins.
- Established as the show’s implication only: that Isaac was a FEDRA commander who defected.
- Not established: an official game script or episode transcript confirming any detail beyond what the cited reporting describes. The reporting above is secondary and was published in 2024 and 2025, so later seasons or updates may have changed the picture.
- Not established: any announced timeline for how the series will adapt the game’s ending for Isaac.
If you want to see the character for yourself, the series is available on HBO’s streaming service in many regions, but availability varies by country and changes over time, so check your local listings before watching.
