Greta Thunberg is a Swedish climate activist whose solo school strike outside Sweden’s parliament in August 2018 helped spark Fridays for Future, a youth-led climate strike movement. Her 2019 address to world leaders at the United Nations brought her advocacy to a global audience; the movement that grew from her protest is collective, not her individual project.
Who is Greta Thunberg?
Thunberg became prominent through public advocacy for climate action. Her story is closely tied to the youth climate strikes, but it is important to distinguish her initial protest from the many young people who joined and shaped the movement that followed.
How did Greta Thunberg start Fridays for Future?
According to Fridays for Future’s account of its strikes, the movement began in August 2018, when Thunberg was 15 and started a school strike for climate outside the Swedish parliament. The campaign encouraged other young people to join under the hashtag #FridaysForFuture.
Her strike helped catalyze a wider movement; it does not mean she personally organized every subsequent strike or speaks for every participant. Fridays for Future describes itself as youth-led and youth-organized.
