Derek Dixon is an actor best known for playing Dale on BET’s The Oval and for appearing in Tyler Perry’s Ruthless. In June 2025, Dixon sued Perry in Los Angeles, seeking at least $260 million and alleging sexual harassment, sexual assault, battery, retaliation, and career-related coercion. Perry, through his attorney, has denied the allegations and called them fabricated.

How Derek Dixon became connected to Tyler Perry
According to Dixon’s complaint, he first encountered Perry in 2019 while working event staff at a party connected to Tyler Perry Studios. Dixon says Perry later offered him an audition, which led to his involvement in Ruthless and subsequently The Oval.

What did Derek Dixon allege against Tyler Perry?

The complaint says Perry sent Dixon unwanted sexually explicit messages. One message quoted in reporting based on the complaint and its exhibits asked: “What’s it going to take for you to have guiltless sex?” The message is presented here as an allegation and an item cited in the lawsuit, not as an independently established fact.
Dixon’s complaint also describes alleged incidents at Perry’s residences, in a production trailer, and during a cast trip. The AP and the Los Angeles Times reported that the complaint described allegations involving a Georgia guest house, another stay at the guest house, and a director’s trailer. Dixon alleges that Perry forcibly removed clothing, groped him, attempted to force sexual contact, and entered a guest-room bed without invitation.
Dixon further alleges that Perry’s professional power affected his ability to respond. According to the AP’s account of the complaint, Dixon said Perry made it clear that Dixon’s character could “die” if he ignored Perry or failed to engage with sexual innuendo. The complaint portrays that alleged threat as part of the pressure Dixon says he experienced while working on the show.

When did Dixon report the alleged conduct?
The AP reported that Dixon filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in 2024. The Los Angeles Times described the EEOC matter as pending in contemporaneous coverage. The research materials do not establish a final EEOC finding.
Dixon later quit the production after, according to the AP, saying that producers did not take action. In a July 2025 interview reported by the Los Angeles Times, Dixon said he felt compelled to speak publicly after concluding that he could not remain silent. How has Tyler Perry responded?
Perry’s attorney, Matthew Boyd, denied Dixon’s allegations shortly after the lawsuit became public. ABC News reported that Boyd characterized the claims as fabricated and said Perry would not be shaken down.
In an October 2025 filing, Perry’s legal team again characterized Dixon’s allegations as false. The filing argued that Dixon had distorted what Perry described as a platonic friendship and professional mentorship. That is Perry’s legal position in the litigation, and it has not been established as the final account of events.
The parties therefore present sharply different accounts. Dixon alleges that Perry used professional influence and promised opportunities to pressure him into unwanted sexual conduct. Perry’s defense disputes the allegations and says the relationship was misrepresented. The court record located for this article does not resolve those competing claims.

The lawsuit began in Los Angeles Superior Court, but defendants removed it to federal court in the Central District of California. Dixon challenged that move and sought remand, which would have returned the case to state court.

On December 12, 2025, Judge John F. Walter denied the motion to remand. That ruling addressed the federal court’s authority to retain the case and the removal-related arguments identified in the order. It was not a ruling that Perry was liable, nor was it a determination that Dixon’s allegations were true or false.

The case was subsequently transferred to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, where it was assigned case number 1:25-cv-07102. The official court material located in this research confirms the transfer and the denial of remand but does not provide a final merits ruling. A secondary docket summary reported that no later substantive merits ruling had been publicly indexed at the time of its review.
