David Corenswet plays both Superman and Clark Kent in James Gunn’s Superman (2025), a new live-action chapter in the character’s history. His route to the role ran from childhood stage work in Philadelphia through Juilliard and screen roles in The Politician, Hollywood, Pearl and Twisters. What distinguishes his approach, by his own account, is the contrast between Superman’s imposing presence and Clark’s effort to disappear into a crowd.
Who is David Corenswet, the new Superman?
Corenswet is an American actor born and raised in Philadelphia. Biography.com reports that he began acting onstage at age nine and later graduated from Juilliard. His work before the title role included the television series The Politician and Hollywood, as well as We Own This City, Look Both Ways, Pearl and Twisters. These are notable career steps, not a complete list of his credits. Biography.com’s profile of Corenswet traces that progression.
How did Corenswet land the Superman role?
Corenswet had described playing Superman as a “pie-in-the-sky ambition” in a 2019 interview. In an Associated Press interview published April 30, 2025, he recalled: “I said it was my pie in the sky ambition, which I meant to mean that there was no (expletive) way it was ever going to happen.” The remark captures how unlikely the role once seemed to him; it does not describe the casting process itself.
AP reported that Gunn had seen Corenswet in Pearl around the time he was considering actors for the film. That timing offers context for the casting, but does not establish that one performance alone secured the part. The Associated Press profile recounts the connection.

What did he bring to Superman and Clark Kent?
Corenswet told AP that he looked to the All-Star Superman comic and Christopher Reeve’s performance while preparing for Clark Kent. In particular, he noticed how Reeve changed his posture when Lois left the room. Corenswet also said he drew on the quiet demeanor of his brother-in-law for Clark.
That preparation points to a distinction built through behavior, not just costume: Clark is physically imposing, yet tries to attract as little attention as possible. Corenswet described him this way: “He’s this big presence, but he’s desperately trying to be as small as possible and as quiet as possible.” The All-Star Superman comic is the specific comic AP reported he consulted; the reporting does not identify a particular edition.

TIME’s April 2025 profile describes Corenswet spending substantial production time in a harness and reports that Gunn valued his close attention to scenes. Gunn joked, “David’s a pain in the ass because he asks a ton of questions about every single little moment,” then explained that those questions could lead to useful performance choices. He also described Corenswet as “Superman, even in his nerdiness,” noting his habit of listening to old jazz standards. TIME’s profile provides the production details and quotations.
What is Superman (2025) about, and who else stars?
DC’s official film page identifies Gunn as both writer and director, with Corenswet playing Superman and Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. DC frames this Superman as driven by compassion and belief in human goodness; that is the studio’s description of its film, not a critical consensus. The movie is titled Superman (2025), rather than the earlier working title Superman: Legacy.

Corenswet’s portrayal belongs to the developing DC Universe continuity. It is not a continuation of every earlier Superman film or television story. DC’s film-history guide separates versions by their films and continuities, including Christopher Reeve’s films, Henry Cavill’s DCEU portrayal and Corenswet’s role in Superman (2025). Reeve’s work is also a direct reference point in Corenswet’s preparation, but that influence does not make their characters part of one continuous story.
