The one detail that changes the answer is who gave birth to him. In X-Men ’97, Nathan was born to a clone created by Mister Sinister, a woman who believed she was Jean Grey and later called herself Madelyne Pryor. The real Jean Grey is Scott Summers’s partner, but she is not the woman who gave birth to Nathan in the show’s account.
Who Nathan Summers is
Scott Summers (Cyclops) and Jean Grey had a son named Nathan. Marvel’s official Cyclops (X-Men ’97) character profile, dated May 17, 2024, names Nathan as their child and identifies the mercenary Cable as the adult version of him. Nathan is the answer to the question as asked: he is Scott’s son, and Cable is the same person later in life.

The clone reveal, step by step
Most casual summaries say “Jean and Scott had a son,” which is true as far as it goes. The show’s fuller account separates the people involved:
- Mister Sinister grows a clone of Jean Grey. The clone is not the real Jean, even though she is physically modeled on her.
- The clone takes Jean’s place and believes she is Jean. Marvel’s official Jean Grey (X-Men ’97) profile, dated May 20, 2024, states that this clone gave birth to Scott’s child, Nathan.
- The clone later calls herself Madelyne Pryor. Madelyne is the name that identifies her separately from Jean.
- The real Jean returns, and the story separates the two. The clone’s actions and identity are not the same as Jean’s, so the Scott-and-Jean relationship and the Madelyne-gave-birth detail have to be read together.
The practical rule is simple: Jean Grey is Nathan’s father’s partner and the woman whose identity the clone borrowed; Madelyne Pryor is the woman who gave birth to him. Stating only “Jean is Nathan’s mother” leaves out the clone, and stating only “Madelyne is the mother” leaves out Jean’s place in the family. Both facts belong in the same answer.

From infant Nathan to Cable
The timeline jump is where most of the confusion starts. Nathan appears as an infant in the early story, and the adult Nathan is the mercenary Cable. Marvel’s Cyclops profile puts the connection in its own words: Scott “learned the mysterious mercenary Cable was really a grown-up Nathan.” This is institutional biography copy from Marvel, not a quotation from a named character or actor.
Rachel Summers and Mother Askani: what is and is not established
Marvel’s Rachel Summers character profile gives her parents as Scott Summers and Jean Grey in an alternate timeline. That is a comics-continuity fact, and it is a fair way to describe Rachel as a related Summers-Grey child.

- Used Book in Good Condition
What the show-specific official character material does not establish is that the Mother Askani seen in the X-Men ’97 finale is Rachel. Nathan’s identity is stated explicitly in the series guides. Mother Askani’s identity is not. Keep the two claims apart: “Rachel is Scott and Jean’s daughter in an alternate timeline in the comics” is supported, while “the show confirmed Mother Askani is Rachel” is not supported by the official series material available.

Further reading
Readers who want the Cable background can look for collected Cable comics, especially the Askani storyline, which Marvel’s Cable reading material connects to Cyclops and to the future story. That material is comics context rather than a direct explanation of the show, so it is best read after the series answer above.
