Who is Cherelle Griner?
Cherelle Griner is a lawyer and public advocate. The public record cited here chiefly documents her relationship with Brittney, her advocacy during Brittney’s detention, and later reporting about their family. GO Magazine reported in June 2026 that Cherelle graduated from law school. The available reporting does not establish a full employment history, current employer, or practice area, so a more detailed career biography would go beyond what is documented.
President Joe Biden publicly referred to Cherelle as Brittney’s wife at the 2023 White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, saying, “Tonight, unlike last year, Brittney Griner is here with her wife Cherelle.” Read the official White House remarks.
How Cherelle supported Brittney during her detention
Cherelle spoke publicly about Brittney’s 2022 detention in Russia and urged people to keep attention on her case. In an October 2022 CBS Mornings interview, she recounted two phone calls with Brittney after her arrest. Describing the second call, she said, “It was the most disturbing phone call I’d ever experienced.” That is Cherelle’s account of the call, not an independent clinical assessment. The Associated Press reported in 2024 that Brittney had been detained for 10 months and was writing about her experience in Coming Home. AP also reported at that time that Cherelle was expecting their first child; later coverage reported the child’s birth in July 2024. Read the Associated Press report.
Marriage, son, and the 2026 divorce filing
NBC’s reporting on court documents says Brittney and Cherelle married on June 18, 2018, and had been separated since July 24, 2026. According to NBC, Brittney filed for divorce in Fulton County Superior Court on July 30, 2026. The filing describes the marriage as irretrievably broken and requests a divorce; those are claims and requests in a court filing, not a final judgment. The couple has one son, Bash, born in July 2024, according to GO Magazine’s June 2026 recap of their conversation about IVF on the ANDMOM podcast. The recap says Brittney’s detention affected the timing of their plans.
