The studio says Betty’s precursor was created as Bimbo’s love interest and first appeared in Dizzy Dishes, released August 9, 1930.
How Betty Boop and Bimbo’s story began
In Dizzy Dishes, Betty appeared as a brief, quasi-canine performer in a cartoon starring Bimbo. Fleischer Studios describes Bimbo as a dog with human traits and says Betty was created to be his love interest. Fleischer Studios’ history of Betty and its account of the character’s early performance style establish that original romantic framing.
Betty’s appearance changed over time: her early design had canine features, while later cartoons developed the familiar human figure. The Library of Congress dates a model-sheet drawing to 1932–1934 based on its design features and the change in presentation associated with the Production Code era. The Library of Congress’s Betty Boop record documents that image and dating.
Did Betty and Bimbo appear together again?
Yes. They both star in the 1932 cartoon Minnie the Moocher, according to the Smithsonian Institution’s record for the film. That co-starring role shows they shared the screen beyond Betty’s first appearance.
