When did Barry Manilow and Garry Kief meet and marry?
ABC News reported that Manilow met Kief in 1978 and that they married in 2014. Entertainment Tonight later placed the wedding in April 2014 at Manilow’s home in Palm Springs, California. ABC News Entertainment Tonight
The marriage became public in 2015. CBS News reported at the time that accounts described a small ceremony at the Palm Springs home, but those details were attributed to other reports and unnamed sources. The couple’s wedding year and location are better established than the reported guest count or other ceremony specifics. CBS News

Why did Manilow keep the relationship private?
When Manilow spoke about the relationship in 2017, he said he had worried that fans might be disappointed to learn he was gay. He also described himself as a private person who had generally kept his personal life out of public view. He told CBS News, “Everybody knows that we’re a team,” and added, “I mean, I’m a very private guy.” CBS News
Manilow said the response from fans moved him and that he was proud of his marriage. His remarks help explain why the relationship was not public earlier; they do not suggest that the couple’s partnership was new when it became news.

What has Manilow said Kief means to him?
Manilow has described Kief as a source of companionship during the rapid rise of his career. In a 2023 interview reported by The Guardian, he recalled that Kief was there through both difficult and joyful moments: “But I met Garry right around when it was exploding. And I didn’t have to go back to those empty hotel rooms. I had somebody to cry with or to celebrate with,” The Guardian
In that same coverage, Manilow characterized Kief as having “saved my life.” That is Manilow’s description of Kief’s emotional support and companionship, not a clinical or literal claim. The Guardian
