Aubrey Plaza plays Rio Vidal, the original Green Witch—and the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s embodiment of Death. The series also confirms that Rio and Agatha Harkness were lovers. What it leaves less defined is their full history and the precise limits of Rio’s nature.
Who is Aubrey Plaza playing in Agatha All Along?
Plaza plays Rio Vidal, a witch who joins Agatha Harkness’s group on the Witches’ Road. Rio’s identity is revealed in episode seven: Lilia Calderu identifies her as Death, and Agatha acknowledges it. The Los Angeles Times’ episode recap notes that the Ouija board had foreshadowed the answer by spelling “D-E-A-T-H.” Read the episode-seven explanation from the Los Angeles Times.
Rio is also identified as the original Green Witch. That title links her to witchcraft and the natural world, but it does not mean the series lays out a complete rulebook for her abilities. Marvel’s series page lists the show and its cast, while D23’s pre-release feature identifies Plaza’s character as Rio Vidal, aka the Green Witch. What does the show establish about Rio and Death?
Showrunner Jac Schaeffer described the creative idea behind the character as “death and life in constant conversation.” Her explanation presents Death not simply as a force of destruction but as part of a cycle. That is the show’s intended characterization, not a comprehensive statement of every power or metaphysical rule in MCU canon.

Schaeffer also says that her notion of Death is that she “can take any form,” while acknowledging that the series leaves room for viewers’ interpretations. The show does not fully explain Rio’s origin, her complete capabilities, or whether this appearance defines how Death must work elsewhere in the MCU. Read TheWrap’s November 1, 2024 interview with Schaeffer.
Were Rio and Agatha lovers?
Yes. Schaeffer calls their relationship a “love affair” and says that “how she is with Agatha is a totally different story.” The series establishes their romantic past, but does not dramatize its full timeline or explain every circumstance that brought them together and drove them apart. The off-screen gaps are intentional space for interpretation, not confirmation of a particular unseen backstory.

Which Rio Vidal identity theories hold up?
| Theory | Status | What the series supports |
|---|---|---|
| Rio is Death | Confirmed | Lilia names her as Death in episode seven, and Agatha acknowledges the reveal. |
| Rio is the original Green Witch | Established | The character is identified by that title; Schaeffer’s comments connect the portrayal of Death with the life-and-death cycle. |
| Rio and Agatha were lovers | Confirmed | Schaeffer directly describes their relationship as a love affair, though the full history remains off-screen. |
| Rio is secretly Dian, Blackheart, or another specific comic character | Unconfirmed speculation | These suggestions circulated before the reveal, but the series identifies Rio as Death. Any comic connection beyond that is conjecture, not her established MCU identity. |
| The series explains all of Rio’s powers and nature | Not established | Schaeffer leaves room for interpretation; the show does not provide a complete origin or powers catalogue. |
Before the reveal, some fan theories tried to connect Rio to other Marvel characters. Nerdist discussed those possibilities as speculation and noted that evidence for a direct relationship was thin. The episode-seven identification changes the baseline: Rio is Death in the series, while proposed links to Dian, Blackheart, or other comic figures remain unconfirmed. Nerdist’s overview of the pre-finale theories.
What does the finale reveal about the Witches’ Road?
The finale reveals that Billy Maximoff’s magic created the Witches’ Road. The coven had treated it as an existing magical path with trials to survive, but the finale reframes the Road as something conjured by Billy. That revelation changes how viewers can interpret the trials and the story’s apparent rules; it does not erase what the characters experienced on the Road.

How does Rio connect to Marvel Comics’ Death?
Marvel Comics’ Death first appeared in Captain Marvel No. 26, according to the Los Angeles Times. That publication history gives useful context for the name, but it does not establish that every aspect of the comics character transfers directly to Rio in the MCU. The series’ own confirmed facts are that Rio is Death and the original Green Witch; claims about a specific comic alter ego or a complete shared origin go beyond what the show establishes.
