Arnel Salvatierra is best known as the Glendale, California teenager who was tried in 1988 and 1989 for killing his father, Oscar Salvatierra, in February 1986. A jury found him guilty of voluntary manslaughter and acquitted him of first-degree murder. The court gave him three years’ probation. The name also appears in two unrelated places, a television character and an online professional profile, and those should not be confused with the case subject.
The historical case subject
The name points most clearly to a 1986 criminal case in Glendale. Contemporary Los Angeles Times coverage described Arnel as 17 years old and a senior at Glendale High School when his father was killed. Reporting from February 1986 says Arnel and his girlfriend were arrested as suspects shortly after the killing. Nothing in the available coverage links the name to a different Arnel Salvatierra of the same age and place, so this case is the reference point for anyone searching the name in a historical context.

Timeline of the case
The reporting spans three stages: the arrest, the trial, and the sentencing. The table below lists each reported event with the Los Angeles Times article that supports it.
| Date (as reported) | Reported event | Source |
|---|---|---|
| February 1986 | Oscar Salvatierra is killed in Glendale. His 17-year-old son Arnel, a Glendale High School senior, and the son’s girlfriend are arrested as suspects. | Sam Enriquez, Los Angeles Times, February 22, 1986 |
| December 15, 1988 | Trial testimony is reported. Prosecution and defense present competing accounts of the family and the killing. Claims about the household and the shooting are attributed to witnesses and counsel, not established as settled fact. | Drew Silvern, Los Angeles Times, December 15, 1988 |
| December 30, 1988 (verdict date as reported) | A jury finds Arnel guilty of voluntary manslaughter and acquits him of first-degree murder. | Esther Schrader, Los Angeles Times, April 29, 1989 |
| April 1989 | The court sentences him to three years’ probation and requires regular psychiatric counseling. The report says he had spent about 2 1/2 years in juvenile custody and was then living with family and attending a Los Angeles-area college, which the article does not name. | Esther Schrader, Los Angeles Times, April 29, 1989 |
A date discrepancy to be aware of
The sources do not agree on the month of the killing. The December 1988 trial report gives the shooting date as February 19, 1986. The April 1989 sentencing report refers in one passage to a “January, 1986” slaying. The February 1986 arrest coverage fits the February date, so February 1986 is the more reliable timeline. Anyone quoting the January reference should note the conflict.

What the trial testimony said
Trial coverage gives the defense’s account of a household in which the father’s authority was absolute. Arnel’s mother, Ligaya Salvatierra, testified in the words the Los Angeles Times attributed to her: “No one could object to Oscar,” she said. “That was the rule of the house. Nobody even argued with him. ‘If I say it’s black, it’s black, even if it’s white,’ he used to say. That was the rule.”
Before his arrest, Arnel spoke to the Los Angeles Times about his father’s movements. He said, “I didn’t see him Tuesday,” and added, “He usually came home late, past midnight, because of the income tax season.” Those remarks are his own words as reported in the newspaper. They are not an independent account of what happened on the night of the killing.

- Factory sealed DVD
Because the trial turned on competing accounts, the testimony should be read as the claims of the witnesses and lawyers who made them. The Los Angeles Times reports did not establish which version the jury accepted in full, and the verdict itself is the only official finding in the record.
The verdict and sentence
The jury convicted Arnel of voluntary manslaughter, a lesser charge than murder, and acquitted him of first-degree murder. In the sentencing report, the Los Angeles Times quoted Deputy District Attorney Susan Wondries: “Arnel has made a great deal of progress, but Arnel is a long way from being rehabilitated,” Wondries said. “All the experts agree that Arnel needs intensive psychological counseling.” That is a 1989 prosecutor’s view, reported in a newspaper, and it is not a current assessment of Arnel.

Other people and characters with the same name
- A television character. TVmaze lists an Arnel Salvatierra character in Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, played by Rhied De Castro. The listing is dated September 19, 2024. It describes a fictional portrayal and does not document the 1986 Glendale case or its participants.
- A professional profile. A LinkedIn search result shows the name alongside the phrase “Secret to Success.” The profile could not be opened, so there is no reliable way to confirm whether it belongs to the same person as the 1986 case subject.
If you encountered the name in the Menendez series, you are looking at a dramatized character, not a documented source on the Glendale case.
What the sources do not establish
The available reporting covers the arrest, trial, verdict, and sentence in 1986 to 1989. It does not establish what became of Arnel after the probation period, where he lives now, or whether he has been involved in any later public matters. Claims about his present life should be treated as unverified unless they come from a newer, dated source. Anyone seeking a court transcript or the full trial record will need the case file from the Los Angeles County court system, which the newspaper reports do not reproduce.
Within the reporting, the most useful things to keep in view are the verdict, the sentence, and the age and school details. Those are the parts most often confused in casual searches.

The Bottom Line
“
Arnel Salvatierra, in the documented sense, is the Glendale teenager who was convicted of voluntary manslaughter in 1989 for the 1986 killing of his father and given three years’ probation. Other people and characters with the name are not the same subject.
