Diana Ross has been married twice: first to music manager Robert Ellis Silberstein, and then to Norwegian businessman and mountaineer Arne Næss Jr. (also commonly rendered Arne Naess). Both marriages ended in divorce. The dates below come from biographies, a contemporaneous news dispatch, and a magazine-style profile, not from marriage or divorce records, so the one point where sources conflict is flagged.

Robert Ellis Silberstein
Silberstein was the first of Ross’s two husbands. He worked as an artist manager in the music business, and ABC News’s profile of Ross identifies the marriage and notes that the couple divorced within six years. A UPI report from 1986 states that Ross had divorced Silberstein in 1976, which is the most specific divorce year available from a source close in time to the event.
Arne Næss Jr.
Ross’s second husband was Arne Næss Jr., a Norwegian businessman and mountaineer. The UPI dispatch published the day after the ceremony places the wedding in Switzerland on Saturday, February 1, 1986. That makes it the strongest contemporaneous account of the event, and it is the date to use if you need one.
Where the sources disagree
Two dates conflict, and neither conflict changes the number of marriages.

The 1985 wedding date
Encyclopedia.com lists an October 23, 1985 marriage to Næss. That conflicts with the February 1986 wedding reported at the time by UPI and with Biography.com’s 1986 start date. Because the 1986 report was written when the event happened, it outweighs a later reference entry. If you cite the date, note that some reference pages give 1985.
The Næss divorce year
Biography.com places the end of the marriage in 1999, while Encyclopedia.com gives 2000. ABC News’s 2002 account confirms that Ross was already divorced from Næss by then, which narrows the question but does not settle it. Write that the marriage ended in divorce, and avoid naming either year as fact unless you have a marriage or divorce record to confirm it.

Berry Gordy is not one of her husbands
Berry Gordy, the founder of Motown, is often mentioned alongside Ross’s personal life, but he was never her husband. ABC News’s profile describes how Ross’s daughter Rhonda learned in adolescence that Gordy was her biological father, and it treats him separately from Ross’s marriages. Keep him out of any list of spouses.

Ross has not given a quotable statement about either marriage in the sources reviewed for this article. In a 2005 Guardian profile she declined to discuss the marriages; the quotes the profile does include concern motherhood and should not be read as comments on her marriages.

What these sources can and cannot establish
- The sources are biographies, a 2005 interview profile, a 1986 news dispatch, and a 2002 news profile. None is a marriage or divorce certificate.
- Two marriages, to Silberstein and Næss, are consistent across all of them.
- The Silberstein divorce year (1976) comes from one contemporaneous report; the Næss divorce year is disputed between 1999 and 2000.
- The 1986 wedding date has contemporaneous support, while the 1985 date appears only in one reference entry.
