Outside journalist Daniel Barbarisi identified him in December 2020, reporting that Stuef retrieved the chest in Wyoming on June 6, 2020. The exact hiding place has not been publicly disclosed in that reporting. Netflix’s 2025 docuseries Gold & Greed: The Hunt for Fenn’s Treasure revisits the search and the people it consumed, but does not establish a confirmed precise location.
Who found Forrest Fenn’s treasure?
The finder was Jack Stuef. In December 2020, journalist Daniel Barbarisi named him in Outside’s account of the discovery. Stuef had authorized the disclosure of his identity. Outside also reported that he retrieved the chest on June 6, 2020, in Wyoming and delivered it to Forrest Fenn.
In an essay published under the byline “The Finder,” Stuef wrote: “I am the person who found Forrest’s famed treasure.” Outside reproduced that statement in its report.
Where was the treasure found?
The reported location is Wyoming. Stuef has not disclosed the precise hiding place in the Outside reporting, so claims identifying a particular park, trail, or landmark should be treated as theories unless supported by new, attributable evidence. A searcher’s interpretation or a documentary participant’s deduction is not the same as confirmation from the finder.

How did the hunt begin?
Forrest Fenn launched the hunt in 2010 with the publication of his memoir, The Thrill of the Chase. The book included a 24-line poem containing clues to a hidden chest. Searchers spent years interpreting the poem and looking for the treasure.
Outside’s reported timeline places the discovery on June 6, 2020, and Stuef’s public identification in December of that year. The distinction matters: the treasure was found in 2020, while the identity of the finder became publicly known months later.

What does Gold & Greed cover?
Gold & Greed: The Hunt for Fenn’s Treasure is a 2025 Netflix three-part docuseries. Netflix frames the series around the real-life search for a hidden chest and a mystery that was ultimately solved by its discovery. See the Netflix Media Center series page or Netflix Tudum’s program coverage for the official title and release framing.
Rather than presenting Stuef as an on-camera finder or publicly confirming the precise solve, the series follows some of the people who remained deeply invested in the hunt. Outside’s coverage of the documentary names searchers Cynthia Meachum, Justin Posey, and the Hurst family, and reports that Posey introduces a new treasure hunt in the finale. That continuation is Posey’s project, not a reopening of Fenn’s completed search.

How to assess claims about the exact solution
When a location claim appears in a documentary, interview, or online discussion, ask who is making it and what kind of evidence they offer. The publicly reported facts here support Stuef’s identity, the June 6, 2020 retrieval, and Wyoming as the state. They do not establish a precise site.
- Finder disclosure: Stuef’s identity was disclosed with his authorization, but the cited report does not name the hiding place.
- Reported fact: Outside attributes the retrieval date and state to its reporting on Stuef.
- Inference or theory: A hunter’s proposed reading of the poem or a participant’s deduction may be interesting, but it should not be presented as a confirmed location.
Books for more context
Daniel Barbarisi’s Chasing the Thrill: Obsession, Death, and Glory in America’s Most Extraordinary Treasure Hunt offers a longer account from the journalist who reported Stuef’s identity. Fenn’s The Thrill of the Chase is the memoir that contained the poem and started the hunt.
