It identifies her as Cloud’s childhood friend; official commentary on Final Fantasy VII Remake describes the ease and closeness between them. That supports reading their bond as intimate, but it is not a direct declaration of Tifa’s feelings.
What Square Enix says about Tifa and Cloud
Square Enix’s official Final Fantasy VII character page calls Tifa Cloud’s childhood friend. It also describes her as an active member of AVALANCHE and notes that she senses something is amiss when they reunite. The summary does not name a lover or state whom Tifa loves.
In official commentary about Final Fantasy VII Remake, co-director Motomu Toriyama describes Tifa as Cloud’s “one and only childhood friend, with whom he can feel at ease.” This is an English rendering on Square Enix’s Japanese portal. Toriyama’s point is that Cloud’s natural, unguarded side comes through in their interactions; the comment supports their familiarity and closeness, but does not itself say Tifa is in love with him. Does that mean Cloud is Tifa’s love interest?
Cloud is the most relevant answer in the story’s relationship material, and readers may interpret the closeness between him and Tifa romantically. The careful distinction is that this is an interpretation of their relationship, not an explicit statement in the official character summary that Tifa loves Cloud.

Square Enix’s localization-team interview discusses conveying emotion and protectiveness in Remake dialogue. It offers context for how characterization is expressed, rather than naming Tifa’s love interest.

The official character page also presents Aerith as an important character in Cloud’s story. That establishes her relevance to the relationships around Cloud, but the page does not settle fan debate about how to interpret those bonds. It is therefore not enough, on its own, to declare a definitive love triangle or to decide every romantic reading.

For a more specific answer, the scene and continuity matter: a player-variable moment should not automatically be treated like a fixed story scene, and a comment about Remake should not be treated as a ruling on every entry or continuity in the wider Final Fantasy VII story.
