Liza does not end the Younger series finale in a confirmed relationship with either Charles or Josh. She and Charles break up for good, and the closing scene with Josh is a hopeful echo of their first meeting in the pilot, not a reunion. Creator Darren Star has described the ending as open.

How the finale ends things with Charles

The finale picks up after Liza and Charles have reconciled, but the old problem is still there. Liza tells Charles that she secretly submitted his unfinished manuscript to Yaddo, the artists’ retreat, and that he has been accepted. Charles asks whether she would have told him if he had not been accepted. Her uncertainty reopens the question of honesty that has defined their relationship.

Liza then asks whether they are going to make it. Charles says he does not think so. Both recognize that they love each other, but they cannot sustain a relationship under the weight of the original deception and the mistrust that followed it. The breakup is explicit on screen, so the Charles storyline is closed.

Star’s explanation, given to the Los Angeles Times on June 10, 2021, frames the couple as a pairing built on projection. He said they had not spent much time together as their authentic selves, that Charles could not get past the original lie, and that Liza was being held to an impossible standard. In other words, the breakup resolves that relationship rather than leaving it in suspense.

Liza’s career ends on a professional win

Liza’s own arc is resolved in a different register. After the breakup, she tells Charles she plans to resign from Empirical, the publishing house where they work. Charles instead prepares to go to Yaddo to finish his book and leaves Liza in charge of the company while he is away. Entertainment Tonight describes her appointment as editor in chief, and the Los Angeles Times reports that Charles plans to leave Empirical in her hands.

That professional outcome is the core of the finale’s resolution. Star made the point directly to the Los Angeles Times: “But the show was never about Liza finding a man; it was always about Liza reinventing herself.” Viewers who read the ending only as a romantic choice are missing the part of the story the creator says was central.

The final scene with Josh

In the last scene, Liza tries to get a bartender’s attention by waving a shoe. Josh appears and repeats the warning and travel exchange associated with their first meeting in the pilot. The two acknowledge the time and history between them. The scene ends without an explicit declaration that they are dating again, and nothing on screen confirms a reconciliation or a commitment.

The echo of the pilot is deliberate, and it is what gives the scene its emotional charge. It signals that the connection has survived, but it does not settle what happens next.

What Darren Star has said about the ending

Star’s most direct comment on the couple’s future came in the Los Angeles Times interview of June 10, 2021: “I think Josh really loves her, and I think she really loves him.” He added: “I don’t know if they’re gonna be together, but I think they’re open to the fact that they’re always going to be in each other’s lives.” That is the clearest answer to whether Liza ends up with Josh: the finale leaves the possibility open rather than confirming a couple.

In a TVLine interview published the same day, Star said: “They’ve always had each other in their lives, and the journey continues.” He explained that the show wanted to “leave it open to all possibilities.” Taken together, these comments support reading the ending as deliberately ambiguous, not as a hidden confirmation that Liza chooses Josh.

Sutton Foster’s reading of the last scene

Sutton Foster, who plays Liza, gave a different emphasis to Entertainment Tonight. She said the ending did not specifically declare “It’s Liza and Josh,” and she described it as open-ended and ambiguous. Her own first reaction, she said, was to read the scene as Liza and Josh, though she acknowledged that this was not Star’s stated intention. Her comments are the actor’s personal interpretation. They are not evidence of a planned endgame, and they should be read alongside the creator’s own explanation rather than in place of it.
