Spoilers for the Season 2 finale, “A Dream and a Memory.” Alex Dutton dies in the 1923 series finale after giving birth to her and Spencer’s son. Jack Dutton is mourned in the episode, but he died in the previous installment. The finale also ends with the deaths of Sheriff McDowell, Banner Creighton, Clyde, Donald Whitfield and Lindy.
Does Alex die in the 1923 finale?
Yes. After a Montana blizzard leaves Alexandra “Alex” Dutton (Julia Schlaepfer) with severe frostbite, she reunites with Spencer and reaches a hospital in Bozeman. She gives birth prematurely to their son, but doctors say she needs amputations to survive. Alex refuses, and Spencer later wakes beside her dead body. TVLine’s finale recap describes the sequence.
What happens to Alex and Spencer’s baby?
Their son survives. His birth comes shortly before Alex’s death, leaving Spencer to face the loss of his wife while raising their child.
Does Jack die in the series finale?
No. Jack Dutton (Darren Mann) dies in the episode immediately before the finale. “A Dream and a Memory” includes the funeral for Jack and Alex and shows how their deaths affect Elizabeth, which can make Jack’s death seem like part of the last episode. TVLine’s recap of the preceding episode places his death there.
Who else dies in the last episode of 1923?
The train-station gunfight
- Sheriff McDowell dies after being shot during the gunfight.
- Banner Creighton dies after the wounded sheriff shoots him. Banner had first shot Clyde, who was about to kill Jacob.
- Clyde also dies in the confrontation.
Whitfield’s mansion
- Donald Whitfield and Lindy die at Whitfield’s mansion. Spencer shoots them before he and Jacob leave the building burning.
The episode also depicts deaths among unnamed gunmen in the station and ranch confrontations. Those characters are not identified by name in the available finale accounts.

Who survives, and what happens after the deaths?
Teonna Rainwater survives. With charges dropped for lack of witnesses and evidence, Marshal Mamie Fossett tells her, “It means you’re free to go,” according to TVLine’s finale recap. Elizabeth leaves Montana for the East Coast.
The finale’s closing voiceover extends the story beyond the immediate events. TVLine reports that Spencer lives another 45 years after Alex’s death, never remarries, and is shown reuniting with Alex in a posthumous vision at the end.
