Why Rick’s ending is a Greek-tragedy reversal
Rick’s revenge does not deliver the justice he wanted. He kills Jim believing he is avenging his father, only to learn that Jim was his father. His refusal to let go of vengeance also brings Chelsea, who loves him, into the violence that kills her.
Creator Mike White described the dynamic to TheWrap as “a classic theme of Greek tragedy, or somebody killing the thing that they love while trying to get some revenge.” TheWrap reported White’s explanation on April 6, 2025.
