The American Idol judges saved Mattie Pruitt on May 5, 2025, making her the seventh singer in Season 23’s Top 7. Josh King was eliminated after the save.
How the Top 7 was decided
The result came during Season 23’s “Judge’s Song Contest” results episode. Of the eight remaining contestants, America’s vote advanced six singers. The judges then saved one of the remaining contestants to complete the Top 7, according to ABC Press.

In the song contest, each contestant chose from three songs, one selected by each judge. A judge earned a point when a singer chose that judge’s song. Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie tied, earning a one-time chance to save one of the bottom two contestants, TVLine reported in its episode recap.
Who was saved and who was eliminated?
The judges used their save on Mattie Pruitt. Josh King was eliminated, while the other six contestants had already advanced through America’s vote. ABC7’s report also confirms Pruitt’s save and King’s elimination.

The result order was Breanna Nix safe, Mattie Pruitt saved, John Foster safe, Josh King eliminated, then Gabby Samone, Jamal Roberts, Thunderstorm Artis and Slater Nalley safe.

Roberts said, “It’s basically how bad do you want it at this point,” then added, “I want it real bad so I got to keep pushing, and I gotta keep doing what I’m doing now.” Host Ryan Seacrest said the performers had moved the audience “emotionally” perhaps more than in the past. Carrie Underwood said, “I want them to shine,” adding that the judges wanted the hopefuls to do a great job.
