The Weeknd’s biggest songs are best read as stories told by a recurring character: a narrator who is lonely, intoxicated, restless, or caught in damaging relationships. Abel Tesfaye has explained the meaning of one major hit directly, “Blinding Lights,” but for the other leading songs the sources available do not name a real-life person as the subject. Treating the narrator as a persona is the most accurate starting point, and it is also the most defensible one.
What “biggest” means in this ranking
“Biggest” depends on the chart, the country, and the measure. The ordering used here comes from Official Charts’ UK ranking of The Weeknd’s biggest songs, which is based on UK chart units. On that list, “Blinding Lights” is first and is described as the artist’s biggest UK single. “Save Your Tears” is third, “The Hills” is fourth, and “Can’t Feel My Face” is fifth.
The Official Charts page reported 476 million UK chart units and 551 million streams for “Blinding Lights” when it was viewed in October 2026. Those figures are the page’s own and may change as the chart is updated. They should not be read as a worldwide or US ranking, and they should not be combined with US Billboard records or global stream totals, which measure something different.
“Blinding Lights”: the one song Tesfaye has explained
In a 2020 Esquire profile, published August 25, 2020, Tesfaye described wanting to see someone at night, being intoxicated, driving toward that person, and being blinded by streetlights because he was lonely. He then addressed the danger in the song directly:

“I don’t want to ever promote drunk driving, but that’s what the dark undertone is.”
That is the most explicit creative explanation available for any of these songs. It describes a scene and a feeling: a nighttime pursuit fuelled by longing and alcohol. It does not identify the person being pursued. Describing that person as a specific former partner or celebrity would go beyond what Tesfaye said.
“The Hills”: a hookup and a conflicted narrator
Official Charts describes “The Hills” as being about a late-night rendezvous with a mysterious hookup. GRAMMY.com describes the narrator as boasting while feeling conflicted about outlaw behaviour and dysfunctional relationships. Those two accounts together make the song a portrait of a self-destructive romantic world rather than a story about a named individual.

Tesfaye’s comments on the song, in a February 2016 Los Angeles Times interview, concern its place in his career rather than its subject. He said:

The quote explains why the song matters to him and to his catalogue. It does not reveal who the hookup is.

“Can’t Feel My Face”: darker themes under a pop surface
GRAMMY.com places “Can’t Feel My Face” on the path of Beauty Behind the Madness, the album that brought The Weeknd to a much wider pop audience, and notes that darker material sits beneath the song’s danceable sound. A 2016 Guardian report connects the song’s numb-face imagery with drug use. That reading is supported by reporting and by the wider narrator of the album, but it is an interpretation of the imagery rather than a line-by-line confession.
The song is also often discussed for its sound. In the same February 2016 Los Angeles Times interview, Tesfaye called the song “obviously a nod toward Michael Jackson” and said Michael Jackson’s Off the Wall had inspired him to sing. That is a statement about musical influence. It does not mean the song is about Jackson, and it should not be read that way.

Those are facts about popularity and collaboration. The sources reviewed here do not establish who the song is about, and public theories about a former partner remain unconfirmed speculation. Readers looking for a direct explanation should look for a song-specific statement from Tesfaye before accepting any particular account.

The Guardian’s 2016 profile describes a narrator associated with drugs, sex, and difficult relationships. In the same piece, Tesfaye acknowledged that some early lyrics made him wince and that some early songs drifted from thoughts he had while under the influence. That admission is useful context: it suggests that the persona is built from experience and fantasy, and that the lyrics are not always a literal diary.
GRAMMY.com frames “The Hills,” “Blinding Lights,” and “Heartless” through dysfunctional or destructive relationships and a dramatic, tragic persona. Read together, these accounts support talking about recurring themes across the catalogue, not claiming that every line is autobiographical.

How to tell fact from fan theory
- Artist statement: Tesfaye’s own words in an interview or profile, such as the Esquire account of “Blinding Lights.”
- Critical or reference description: a description by a publication or chart body, such as Official Charts’ summary of “The Hills” or GRAMMY.com’s framing of the persona.
- Influence or career context: comments about sound, inspiration, or importance, such as the Michael Jackson reference or the “most important song” remark. These do not identify a subject.
- Fan theory: any claim about a specific real person that does not appear in one of the categories above.
Using that test, the most accurate answer for most of the biggest songs is that they describe a dramatic persona and its relationships, not a publicly confirmed individual.
