Several pairings are widely shipped by fans, and two of the most discussed are Yae Miko with Ei, and Alhaitham with Kaveh. Each rests on a different kind of evidence, so the labels matter as much as the names.
Why “canon couple” and “popular ship” are different things
Most confusion about this question comes from using one word for three separate ideas. An academic thesis on Genshin Impact fandom, held in the Tilburg University repository and dated 2024, draws the distinction clearly. Its author is listed only as “E.” in the repository record. The thesis treats shipping, queer-coded readings, and headcanons as fan practices that reinterpret or extend the official story. It does not treat them as confirmation that two characters are in a relationship.
In practice, that gives you three separate labels to keep apart:
- Official text: something a character says, a quest establishes, or a game document states directly.
- Subtext or queer-coded reading: interactions, dialogue tone, or framing that some players read as romantic or queer, without the game stating it.
- Ship or headcanon: a pairing a fan wants or imagines. A ship can be widely popular and still have no official romantic statement behind it.
A pairing can be very popular in fan communities and still sit entirely in the second and third categories. That is the situation the sources describe.

The two pairings most often named
The sources reviewed name two pairings as the most prominent fan readings. The table below sets out what each one rests on. The entries reflect only what the thesis and the official pages examined support.
| Pairing | What official material establishes | What fans infer | Is romance explicitly stated? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yae Miko and Ei | Interactions between the two characters. The thesis does not present an official statement that they are a couple. | A queer-coded reading, supported in part by the in-game novel Pretty Please, Kitsune Guuji?, which fans point to as suggestive. | No. The thesis analyzes these cues as fan interpretation, not as an explicit declaration. |
| Alhaitham and Kaveh | The two are roommates in canon, and the game gives them notable interactions. | A romantic ship. The thesis describes the relationship as open-ended. | No. The thesis describes the pairing as fandom shipping rather than explicit romance. |
Notice that the “official” column for Alhaitham and Kaveh is about shared living arrangements and interactions. Living together is a fact of the story. Romance is a reading placed on top of it.

What the sources can and cannot confirm
The official HoYoverse news page surfaced in our search is not a statement about any character’s sexuality or relationship status. A HoYoLAB community discussion surfaced too, but it is fan conversation, not a developer policy. Neither source settles every pairing, and we did not locate a comprehensive official statement covering the question.
That gap has two consequences. First, you cannot say that Genshin Impact has no queer characters or no queer subtext, because the sources do not establish that. Second, you cannot say the developers have a definitive policy on queer relationships, because no such policy statement was found. A fan reading and an official confirmation are different things, and the difference is the main point here.

Story updates add quests, novels, and character content, and any of them could alter the picture. The findings here reflect the thesis dated 2024 and the official and community pages reviewed at the time of writing, and they should be read as a snapshot rather than a permanent ruling.
How to check a pairing yourself
- Open the character’s profile and story quests in the game, and note what the characters say about each other in their own voice, not in fan edits or summaries.
- Check the in-game books and story texts you can read directly, including Pretty Please, Kitsune Guuji? for the Yae Miko and Ei reading.
- Look for an official HoYoverse news post on the specific update or character. Do not treat a community post as a developer statement.
- Label what you find using the three categories above before you repeat it to anyone else.
How to phrase it accurately
Language matters here. Phrases such as “often shipped,” “read by some fans as,” and “interpreted as queer-coded” describe the evidence accurately. Avoid saying a pair is “canonically dating” unless an official passage says so directly. And avoid presenting a fan reading as a fact about a character’s sexuality, because the game has not made that claim.

Scope of this answer
This answer is based on a limited review: one broad search, a 2024 academic thesis on queer readings in the fandom, and the official and community pages noted above. It does not claim to have read every quest, every language version, or every update. If you are checking a specific pairing, the in-game text is the place to start.
