Meghan Markle’s parents are Doria Ragland and Thomas Markle. By Meghan’s account, they met in California in the late 1970s while working at a television studio, married, and divorced when she was six. Ragland attended Meghan’s 2018 wedding to Prince Harry; Thomas did not. Their public biographies include very different kinds of work and public attention, so details about their family relationships are best understood through attributed accounts rather than assumptions about private life.
Who are Meghan Markle’s parents?
Meghan’s mother is Doria Ragland, and her father is Thomas Markle. Meghan has said they met in California in the late 1970s, when Thomas worked as a lighting director for a soap opera and Ragland was a temporary employee at the studio. They had Meghan in 1981 and divorced when she was six, according to Meghan’s account quoted by Vogue and an ITV News profile published in 2018.

Meghan has described both parents as part of her childhood, though accounts do not support reducing her living arrangements to a simple custody summary. ITV reported that she lived with Ragland in Los Angeles and also spent substantial time with Thomas. The parents’ occupations and public profiles differ, but the amount of coverage each has received is not a measure of their closeness to Meghan.
Who is Doria Ragland?
Ragland has generally kept a lower public profile than Thomas. Meghan has described her mother affectionately: in writing quoted by Vogue, she called Ragland a “free spirit” and described their close, friend-like bond. In a 2025 Harper’s Bazaar interview, Meghan recalled her mother teaching her how to play and described them as a close duo.

Ragland’s work and Meghan’s childhood memories
Published accounts describe Ragland’s work across different periods. ITV reported that she had worked at a day centre for adults with memory loss and as a yoga therapist, and described her as a clinical therapist. In the 2025 Harper’s Bazaar interview, Meghan recalled that her mother worked as a travel agent during part of her childhood. Meghan said Ragland used employee discounts for trips to Mexico around Day of the Dead. These accounts describe roles at particular times; they do not establish Ragland’s current employment.
Who is Thomas Markle?
Thomas worked in television as a lighting director. Vogue and ITV identify credits including the soap opera General Hospital and Married… with Children. ITV reported that his team’s work on General Hospital received two Emmy awards; that is a distinction for the team’s work, not a claim that Thomas personally won two individual awards.
Meghan’s earlier recollections, quoted by Vogue and ITV, credit her father with supporting her acting ambitions and taking an active role in her childhood. Those accounts offer a contrast to later reporting about their relationship, but they should not be treated as a complete account of either person’s private perspective.
What happened between Meghan and her father at the 2018 wedding?
Thomas was expected to walk Meghan down the aisle, according to ITV’s wedding coverage in May 2018, but he did not attend. The Independent’s retrospective account says Meghan walked part of the aisle alone before Prince Charles joined her. The initial plan and the event itself were different: the expectation that Thomas would take part was not what happened on the wedding day.

What is publicly known about Meghan and Thomas’s relationship now?
Later coverage, including a February 2025 Entertainment Daily account, describes Meghan and Thomas as estranged. That is a description of the publicly reported relationship, not a full account of private contact or its causes. Entertainment Daily’s story summarizes public interviews and reporting by other outlets; public statements alone do not establish private motivations, and the available accounts do not justify assigning blame.
Ragland’s public remarks have also been limited. The Independent quoted her from the Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan saying, “I’m ready to have my voice heard, that’s for sure.” The comment is a recorded public statement, not a substitute for Ragland’s private account of family events.
