Terry built his career in oil and gas before the family bought the Buffalo Sabres and Buffalo Bills; Kim has her own business and sports leadership history. Their wealth is often described in billionaire terms, but the official biographies cited here do not give a current combined net-worth figure.
Who are Jessica Pegula’s parents?
Jessica Pegula is a professional tennis player. The WTA profile identifies Terry (Terrence) Pegula as her father, describes his work in oil and gas, and identifies Kim Pegula as her mother and a business owner. It also lists Jessica’s siblings and notes that she owns a skincare company called Ready 24. Those details do not establish that her parents’ assets belong to Jessica or identify a particular Ready 24 product. WTA profile of Jessica Pegula.
How did Terry Pegula build his business career?
Terry Pegula studied petroleum and natural gas engineering at Penn State and worked for Getty Oil and Felmont Oil before starting East Resources, an independent oil and gas exploration and production company, in 1983. The Buffalo Sabres’ official biography says he borrowed $7,500 from family and friends to launch it. That figure describes the company’s startup funding, not the family’s wealth.
He built East Resources over 27 years. Royal Dutch Shell purchased the company’s assets in July 2010. The Sabres biography also describes subsequent energy ventures, including HG Energy and JKLM Energy; its account is a biographical record, not confirmation that every listed business remains a current holding. When did the Pegulas buy the Sabres and Bills?
The family’s move into sports ownership followed Terry’s energy career. Official team and league biographies give these dates:
| Year or date | Milestone |
|---|---|
| February 22, 2011 | Terry and Kim Pegula purchased the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres, according to the team biography. |
| October 8, 2014 | The Pegulas became owners of the NFL’s Buffalo Bills after league approval, according to the NFL Foundation biography and Sabres biography. |
The Sabres biography also discusses the Rochester Americans, Buffalo Bandits and Buffalo’s LECOM Harborcenter. Because ownership and operating arrangements can change, those references should be understood as details in the team’s biography, not as a definitive list of current holdings. What is Kim Pegula’s background?
Kim Pegula was born in Seoul, South Korea, adopted at age five and raised primarily in Fairport, New York, according to her NFL Foundation biography. She attended Houghton College, graduated in 1991 with a communications degree, began her business career at East Resources in 1991 and married Terry in 1993. Her professional story therefore includes business work as well as the family’s later sports ownership.
Jessica described her mother’s early life in a first-person Buffalo Bills feature published on May 26, 2023. In that account, she wrote: “My mom was born in Seoul. She was left by her birth parents outside of a police station, spent time in an orphanage, and was adopted by my grandparents and brought to Fairport, New York when she was five years old.” Jessica also wrote that Kim “became president of both the Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres” and described her as the first woman to hold that title in either league. Those are Jessica’s statements in her 2023 feature, rather than a current description of Kim’s roles. Jessica Pegula’s first-person feature.

What is known about the Pegulas’ wealth?
“Billionaire” is a common framing for the family, but the official biographies cited above do not publish a current combined net-worth figure. The Associated Press reported a $6.8 billion net-worth estimate for the Pegulas in April 2024 in its coverage of a proposed minority stake in the Bills. That is a dated reported estimate, not an audited valuation or a current figure. It also should not be confused with Jessica Pegula’s individual finances. Associated Press report, April 2024.
