Jane Fonda’s three children are Vanessa Vadim, Troy Garity, and Mary Luana Williams. Vanessa is Fonda’s daughter with filmmaker Roger Vadim; Troy is her son with activist Tom Hayden; and Mary Williams is her adoptive daughter.
Who are Jane Fonda’s children?
- Vanessa Vadim is Fonda’s daughter with French filmmaker Roger Vadim.
- Troy Garity is Fonda’s son with activist Tom Hayden. Fonda’s official biography identifies Garity as an actor.
- Mary Luana Williams is Fonda’s adoptive daughter. Vanity Fair reported that Fonda adopted Williams when she was a teenager; Williams later published her memoir, The Lost Daughter, in 2013.
The family relationships are described in a 2023 Vanity Fair report and a 2018 Los Angeles Times report. Fonda’s official biography names Vanessa and Troy but does not include Mary in its visible family summary.
How the children appear in Jane Fonda in Five Acts
The 2018 documentary Jane Fonda in Five Acts includes interviews with Troy and Mary. Vanessa declined to participate, according to the Los Angeles Times. That decision alone does not establish her reasons or describe her relationship with her mother.
What Jane Fonda has said about motherhood
In an interview with CNN’s Chris Wallace, reported by Vanity Fair on February 27, 2023, Fonda spoke about regret over aspects of her earlier parenting and her efforts to show up for her children now. “I was not the kind of mother that I wished that I had been to my children. I have great, great children—talented, smart. And I just didn’t know how to do it,” she said.

Troy also reflected on the experience of having a famous, politically engaged mother in a 2018 Los Angeles Times interview. “Listen, do I wish that my mother was home cooking me meals and that we spent more time together? Yeah, I do,” he said. His comment belongs to a broader reflection on Fonda’s choices and his own adulthood, not a complete account of their relationship.

The Lost Daughter is Williams’s memoir, published in 2013. It offers Williams’s first-person perspective; it should not be treated as a comprehensive biography of all three of Fonda’s children.
