He said “Matilda” grew from an experience with someone he knew, while describing “As It Was” as a song about change and self-discovery. He has described “Two Ghosts” as being about things changing; the suggestion that it is about Taylor Swift was not confirmed by him.
What Styles has—and hasn’t—said about his songs
Song-attribution claims are not all the same. Styles has described a personal inspiration for “Matilda,” explained the themes of “As It Was” and “Two Ghosts,” and left the identity of any real-life subject unconfirmed in some cases. A song’s apparent connection to a relationship, or a host’s suggestion about its subject, is not the same as confirmation from the songwriter.

| Song | What Styles said | What can be concluded |
|---|---|---|
| “Matilda” | It came from an experience with someone he knew, whose story he disguised. | A personal inspiration is acknowledged; the person is not named. |
| “As It Was” | It is about metamorphosis, losing and finding yourself, and unexpected change. | Styles explained the theme, not a specific person as the subject. |
| “Two Ghosts” | He described returning to something that is no longer the same and said that sometimes things change. | He did not confirm Taylor Swift as its subject. |
| “Cherry” and “Fine Line” | He named both among his favorite songs on Fine Line. | The cited interview does not establish a specific real-life subject for either. |
“Matilda”: inspired by someone Styles knew, but not identified
In a May 20, 2022, interview with NPR’s Leila Fadel, Styles said “Matilda” was “definitely disguised as Roald Dahl ‘Matilda.’” He explained that the song came from an experience with someone who had described troubling treatment by family. Styles wanted to reassure that person that he had listened, while emphasizing that their experience was not his to claim as his own.
“It was about an experience that I had with someone,” Styles told NPR. He added that it was “just wanting to kind of reassure them that I was listening.” The interview does not identify the person. NPR’s interview transcript, published by Houston Public Media, is the clearest account of what he said.

A NYLON feature published May 24, 2022, also quotes Styles describing the inspiration as “that experience and person.” Its reading of the song as a message about choosing one’s own family is the publication’s interpretation, not an identification of the person or a confirmed biographical account.
“As It Was”: a song about change and self-discovery
Asked what moment in time he was singing about, Styles described “As It Was” as “about metamorphosis, losing yourself, finding yourself.” He also spoke of embracing the fact that life can hit at unexpected times. That is his explanation of the song’s theme, not confirmation that it is about one particular person. His comments appear in the 2022 NPR interview.

“Two Ghosts”: why the Taylor Swift theory remains unconfirmed
Styles said he wrote “Two Ghosts” in California about four years before the 2017 interview with SiriusXM. He described its idea as returning to something that “isn’t necessarily the same.” In a separate BBC Radio 1 exchange reported by Vogue, he said the song was about how “sometimes things change.”
During that exchange, host Nick Grimshaw suggested the song was about Taylor Swift. Styles did not confirm the suggestion. The Vogue report on the BBC Radio 1 exchange documents the suggestion and his response; it does not establish Swift as the song’s subject. The SiriusXM interview report, published July 28, 2017, records his comments about the song’s creation and returning to something changed.

What’s established about “Cherry” and “Fine Line”?
In a 2020 NPR interview, Styles named “Cherry” and “Fine Line” among his favorite tracks on Fine Line. That comment shows his affection for the songs, but it does not identify a real-life subject for either. The interview is available at NPR.

How to tell confirmation from speculation
- Direct inspiration: Styles said an experience with someone he knew inspired “Matilda,” but he deliberately disguised the story and did not name the person.
- Direct thematic explanation: His comments about “As It Was” concern change and self-discovery; his comments about “Two Ghosts” concern change and something no longer feeling the same.
- Outside attribution: The Taylor Swift idea for “Two Ghosts” was raised by a radio host and remains unconfirmed by Styles in the reported exchange.
- No established identity: The cited comments about “Cherry” and “Fine Line” do not provide a named subject.
