Whitney Houston had three older brothers: John Houston III, Gary Garland and Michael Houston. Gary was her maternal half-brother, Michael was her full brother, and John Houston III is identified as her paternal half-brother. The clearest documented details concern Gary and Michael; available biographical information about John is limited.
How Whitney Houston was related to each brother

Gary Garland: basketball and music

Whitney’s official biography recounts an early musical appearance: in 1978, when Whitney was 14, she performed at Town Hall with her mother, Cissy, and Gary. That account places Gary alongside them at that performance, but does not establish a specific role for him on Whitney’s later recordings.
Michael Houston: her full brother
Michael and Whitney were both children of Cissy and John Russell Houston. A September 1994 Biography Today profile identifies Michael as Whitney’s road manager and says Gary sang in her act. Those descriptions are reports from that period, not claims about either brother’s role throughout Whitney’s life.

John Houston III is identified as Whitney’s paternal half-brother. The sources cited here do not independently corroborate that relationship or establish further biographical details, so a fuller account of his life or career cannot be given reliably on this evidence.
