The 2024 reports described recipe work and a playful social media tease. They did not announce a product on shelves.
What Yogo Dirt Dessert was
Yogo Dirt Dessert was a layered chocolate Yogo dessert made from chocolate cookie crumble, soft marshmallows and chocolate Yogo. PerthNow’s 2024 account describes it as a West Australian favourite, and that regional identity matters: the product was sold through Brownes Dairy’s Western Australian business, and the demand the company describes comes largely from WA shoppers.
Why it left the range
PerthNow reported that Brownes deleted Dirt Dessert from its range in 2012 because of low sales. The same 2024 article gave three production reasons that made a simple restart difficult:
- The machinery was sold. A Brownes spokesperson told PerthNow: “When the decision was made to stop selling the product the machine was also sold off. Whilst we’ve had numerous people in WA ask us to bring this iconic dessert back, we actually couldn’t.”
- The factory became allergen-restricted. The spokesperson said the Balcatta facility is now gluten and wheat-allergen free, so the cookie crumble cannot be remade there. The company described the site as completely allergen-free apart from milk products.
- The marshmallow supplier had closed. PerthNow reported that the original marshmallow supplier is no longer operating, so the recipe would need a new source.
These are reported explanations from the company’s side. PerthNow did not name the spokesperson, and the article does not describe the sale of the machine or the supplier’s closure in independent detail.

The 2019 petition and protest
Demand did not disappear with the product. In 2019, PerthNow reported that fans protested outside Brownes’ Balcatta facility after a petition gathered thousands of signatures. The report said Natalie Sarich-Dayton, who was then the company’s sales and marketing manager and is now chief executive, suggested the product could return for a trial period if enough supporters showed up. That was a conditional comment about a trial, not a commitment to a permanent return.
What changed in 2024
The PerthNow report of 14 March 2024
Kellie Balaam’s PerthNow article, published 14 March 2024, reported that Brownes had been developing the recipe and that the company hoped to bring the dessert back. Its headline used the word “might,” and the coverage described development work rather than a launch. The company’s spokesperson said:

The April Fools campaign
On 1 April 2024, Brownes Dairy and its agency MITP released an April Fools video. Campaign Brief WA, in a report by Kim Shaw published 5 April 2024, described it as an indirect tease. Andrew Douglas, Brownes Dairy’s Head of Digital, said Dirt Dessert “has been an active project for years” and that “final launch plans” were starting to take shape. He also said the company “couldn’t pass up the opportunity to go all in and address the rumours.”
The agency’s creative lead, Dave Gardiner, explained the approach: “We knew audiences would infer the product is coming back if we used the April Fools to say that it isn’t.” The campaign was built to create an impression, not to confirm a product, and it should be read that way.

Where things stand in October 2026
The official Brownes Yogo and Desserts catalogue, checked on 8 October 2026, lists Yogo and dessert products and general retailer information. It does not list Dirt Dessert, so it does not establish that the dessert is currently sold.
That is a limit of the page, not proof that the product is discontinued again. A catalogue can omit limited runs, and no source reviewed here states that Brownes has ruled out a future release. Equally, nothing reviewed here shows that a release has happened.

Woolworths lists Brownes Dairy Yogo Chocolate Yoghurt in a 170g size. That is the regular chocolate Yogo, an adjacent product. It is not Dirt Dessert, and a listing for it should not be read as a Dirt Dessert listing.

| Claim in circulation | What the sources establish |
|---|---|
| Dirt Dessert is back on shelves | Not established. The official catalogue checked on 8 October 2026 does not list it. |
| A release date has been announced | Not established. The 2024 coverage gave no date. |
| Brownes confirmed a return in April 2024 | Not established. The April Fools video teased the idea and avoided a direct confirmation. |
| Brownes is developing a new recipe | Reported by PerthNow on 14 March 2024, based on a company spokesperson’s statements. |
| The product is permanently discontinued | Not established. The sources describe a 2012 deletion and later work on a return, but no source rules out a future release. |
The figures in the coverage, and what they measure
- 12,000 tubs per week. PerthNow, 2024, described this as peak West Australian consumption. The article did not state the measurement year or the data source, so it should be treated as the publication’s reported figure, not an audited one.
- 2,300 followers. PerthNow, 2024, reported this count for the “Bring Back Yogo Dirt Dessert” Facebook page at the time of publication. It is a dated social audience figure, not a measure of current demand.
- More than 20,000 video views and more than 1,000 engagements in 24 hours. Campaign Brief WA, 2024, reported these campaign performance numbers for the April Fools video. They measure attention to the tease, not sales or launch demand.
How to check whether it has returned
- Open Brownes Dairy’s official Yogo and Desserts catalogue and search for “Dirt Dessert.” If it is absent, the company has not listed it there at the time you check.
- Search the online ranges of the supermarkets that carry Brownes products in Western Australia. Confirm that any listing says “Dirt Dessert” and is not the regular chocolate Yogo.
- Check Brownes Dairy’s own channels for a dated announcement. A confirmed launch would normally state a date, a pack size and where it will be sold.
- Treat social media comments, petition counts and “any release dates yet?” questions as interest, not proof of availability.
What a confirmed relaunch would need to show
If Brownes confirms a return, the most useful comparison with the original will be on four points: the layers and ingredients announced, the pack size, the geographic availability, and whether the recipe or manufacturing method changed. The 2024 explanation implies that the cookie crumble and marshmallow inputs are the parts most likely to differ, because the Balcatta facility and the original marshmallow supplier are no longer as they were.
No independent taste test of the original or of any revival is documented in the sources reviewed for this article, and this article does not offer one. Any taste comparison published later should say whether it is a sourced review or a personal test.
Until Brownes confirms a product with a date and a listing, the accurate position is that Dirt Dessert has been discussed as a possible return and that the company has said it is working on it. It has not been shown to be back.
