The Tortured Poets Department is widely read through the end of Taylor Swift’s relationship with Joe Alwyn and her brief 2023 relationship with Matty Healy. Critics have connected lyrics to both men, but the available sources do not establish a definitive song-by-song key from Swift herself. The most accurate answer separates documented relationship context from interpretation.
What is known about the album and its context?
Swift released The Tortured Poets Department on April 19, 2024. The Associated Press identified it as her eleventh studio album and reported an initial 16-track edition; some product descriptions included the bonus track “The Manuscript.” AP also reported that “Fortnight” features Post Malone and “Florida!!!” features Florence + the Machine. These release details establish the album’s configuration, not the identity of the people behind its narrators. Associated Press
AP reported that Swift announced the album at the 2024 Grammy Awards and said she had kept it secret for two years. Coverage has placed its emotional material against the end of her private relationship with actor Joe Alwyn and the attention surrounding her brief 2023 relationship with musician Matty Healy. That context helps explain why listeners look for both men in the songs, but it does not confirm an individual track’s subject. Associated Press Apple Music
Which lyrics have been connected to Matty Healy?
ELLE’s analysis argues that several lyrics appear to point toward Healy. That is a critic’s interpretation of the writing, not a confirmation from Swift that a particular song is about him. The distinction matters: a lyric may seem to fit a public timeline or a distinctive detail without proving who inspired its narrator. ELLE

How does Joe Alwyn fit into interpretations of the album?
Apple Music’s album editorial frames the record against the backdrop of the end of Swift’s highly private relationship with Alwyn. That supports describing the breakup as part of the album’s context; it does not identify which lyrics, if any, are a literal account of him. The Guardian likewise reads the record as a set of breakup narratives, offering a critical perspective rather than an artist-issued track guide. Apple Music The Guardian
What does the title track establish?
The Guardian points to the title track’s allusions to poet Dylan Thomas and musician-poet Patti Smith, quoting: “You’re not Dylan Thomas / I’m not Patti Smith.” The lines place the song in a knowingly self-aware, literary register. They are not evidence that the album’s narrators are documentary portraits or that the title track concerns either Alwyn or Healy. The Guardian

There is no authoritative track-by-track key in these sources. When weighing a claim that a lyric refers to Alwyn or Healy, ask:

- Is there a distinctive detail? A specific image or event is more suggestive than a general theme such as heartbreak, but it still needs independent context.
- Who is making the claim? Separate Swift’s own statements from a critic’s analysis and from fan speculation. The sources cited here offer critical and editorial interpretations, not Swift’s definitive assignments.
- Does the reading rely on chronology? A lyric’s apparent fit with a relationship timeline is an inference, not proof of authorship or intent.
On that standard, it is fair to say that listeners and critics have read the album through both relationships. It is not supported to present those readings as confirmed identities for particular songs.
