Deepchandi and Addha are prominent in the instructional sources, while Kaharva (also spelled Keharwa), Dadra and, in one practical guide, Teentaal are also named. The choice and its treatment depend on the composition and the performance’s laya—the pace and rhythmic flow.
Which taals are used for thumri?
The University of Rabindra Bharati groups Deepchandi and Addha under “Thumri anga tal” for thumri, dadra and related semi-classical styles. The University of Delhi’s thumri and dadra course prescribes Deepchandi/Chachar and Addha Trital, and also includes Kaharva and Dadra. A practical accompaniment guide names Deepchandi, Addha, Keharwa and Teentaal as possible choices for thumri.
Together, these sources establish a range of taught or suggested options—not a universal sequence, ranking, or claim about which taal is most common in performances. The spellings Kaharva and Keharwa appear in different sources; both are included here as source-specific forms.
How can the taal and laya change during a performance?
Deepchandi and tempo
Rabindra Bharati describes Deepchandi as a madhyalay, or medium-tempo, tala, and cautions that changing its tempo affects the song’s chhanda, or rhythmic character. This is guidance in that instructional document, not a prescription that every thumri must remain at one pace.

Transitions and laggi
Tabla Legacy describes an accompaniment approach in which laya doubles after the asthayi and antara, Deepchandi shifts to Keharwa at dugun, and laggis are used as the pace rises. This is one source’s practical guidance, not a rule for every performer or composition. It illustrates how accompaniment may move from articulating a cycle to more animated rhythmic activity as the performance develops.
What should you listen for?
- The recurring cycle: Listen for the repeating rhythmic frame that helps anchor the singer’s line.
- The theka: Notice how the tabla articulates the basic pattern. Delhi’s course includes theka study alongside the named thumri and dadra taals.
- Changes of pace: The course teaches dvigun, tigun and chaugun, terms for doubled, tripled and quadrupled rhythmic subdivisions. Treat them as listening vocabulary, not evidence that every performance uses each treatment.
- Hand beats and padhant: Delhi’s curriculum includes hand beats and padhant, the spoken recitation of rhythmic material. These can help a learner follow tala in study or practice.
- Laggi: The Delhi course includes laggi in tala study, and Tabla Legacy describes its use as laya rises. Listen for how the accompaniment becomes more animated in a passage rather than assuming the same texture continues throughout.
What the available sources do—and do not—establish
The university materials are curricula and instructional text: they show which taals are taught or prescribed for thumri and allied repertoire. Tabla Legacy offers practical accompaniment guidance. These sources do not establish the frequency of each taal across recordings or concerts, nor do they provide a consistent comparison of beat counts, divisions and thekas for every named cycle. A listener can identify the options and follow changes in laya without assuming that one choice is obligatory.
