Lilly is a dramatic feature about Lilly Ledbetter, the Goodyear worker whose fight over unequal pay grew into a campaign for equal-pay rights. Patricia Clarkson stars as Ledbetter. The film follows the legal and political struggle, but director Rachel Feldman has said she was especially interested in its personal and psychological cost.
What is Lilly about?
The film’s official synopsis follows Ledbetter from her job as a supervisor at a Goodyear tire factory through her discovery of a pay disparity, her lawsuit, a Supreme Court defeat, and her subsequent advocacy in Congress. It frames the story as both a legal-political drama and a family story about the toll of a prolonged fight.
That is the film’s account of Ledbetter’s story, not an independent legal-history review. Its focus is not only the outcome of a case, but the persistence required to keep pressing for change after a courtroom setback.
Is Lilly based on a true story?
Yes. The film dramatizes the life and equal-pay fight of Lilly Ledbetter. The official film site describes her as having grown up in Possum Trot, Alabama, worked at Goodyear, and become an advocate after learning about the pay disparity. As a dramatization, the film presents her story through a scripted narrative rather than serving as a documentary.

Who plays Lilly Ledbetter?
Patricia Clarkson plays Lilly Ledbetter. John Benjamin Hickey and Thomas Sadoski are also among the starring cast. In a May 2025 Associated Press interview, Clarkson discussed taking on the role and the film’s political moment; AP described the film as opening theatrically that month.
Why does the film emphasize the personal cost?
Feldman has described the personal dimension as central to her approach. In a statement on the film’s official About page, she said: “Though Lilly Ledbetter’s political achievements are the architecture upon which the narrative of the film is framed, and the issues of Fair Pay and Gender Equity are clearly thematic pillars, my focus as a filmmaker is the personal and psychological cost of Lilly’s relentless struggle.”
That emphasis distinguishes the film’s stated approach from a story focused only on legal milestones: it also asks what sustained resistance demands of the person and family living through it.
When was the film released, and how long is it?
Lilly had its world premiere at the Hamptons International Film Festival in 2024. The festival program identifies it as a 93-minute, English-language narrative feature. The Associated Press reported a theatrical opening in May 2025, so the “2024” in the title refers to the film’s festival-era identification, not its reported theatrical opening.
