Andrew Mountbatten Windsor lost the right to use the title Prince and the style Royal Highness through Letters Patent dated 3 November 2025. His Duke of York title was removed from the Roll of the Peerage and will no longer be used officially. Earlier, in 2022, his military affiliations and royal patronages were returned to Queen Elizabeth II, and he stopped undertaking public duties. A separate Royal Lodge lease notice concerns his residence, not a title.
What changed, and when?
The changes took place in stages. Andrew first announced that he would stop using his title and honours; Buckingham Palace then announced a formal process; and the formal removal of the Prince title and Royal Highness style followed by Letters Patent. The 2022 return of public roles was a separate, earlier measure.
2022: military affiliations, patronages and public duties
With Queen Elizabeth II’s approval in January 2022, Andrew’s military affiliations and royal patronages were returned to the Queen. He was also no longer to undertake public duties, according to the House of Commons Library briefing.
17 October 2025: Andrew says he will stop using titles and honours
In a statement, Andrew said: “I will therefore no longer use my title or the honours which have been conferred upon me.” That was an announcement of non-use, not the later formal removal of the Prince title and Royal Highness style. His statement was reported on 17 October 2025.

30 October 2025: Palace announces a formal process
Buckingham Palace said King Charles III had “initiated a formal process to remove the Style, Titles and Honours of Prince Andrew.” The Palace said Andrew would be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor. The Palace statement was issued on 30 October 2025.
The Palace also said: “These censures are deemed necessary, notwithstanding the fact that he continues to deny the allegations against him.” It added that the King and Queen’s “thoughts and utmost sympathies have been, and will remain with, the victims and survivors of any and all forms of abuse.” These are the Palace’s statements and rationale, not findings by a court.
3 November 2025: formal removal of Prince and Royal Highness
Letters Patent dated 3 November 2025 removed Andrew’s title of Prince and style of Royal Highness. The College of Arms identifies the Letters Patent, and a House of Lords written answer published 17 November 2025 records their effect.
Which titles, honours and roles were affected?
Prince
The Prince title was formally removed by the 3 November 2025 Letters Patent. It is therefore inaccurate to use “Prince Andrew” as a present-tense title without explaining that it was removed.
Rank #3
Royal Highness
The style Royal Highness, often abbreviated HRH, was removed by the same Letters Patent. Parliament’s written answer says Andrew’s entitlement to the title Prince and the style Royal Highness was removed by that instrument.
Duke of York
Andrew said in October 2025 that he would stop using his title. Parliament later recorded that the Duke of York title had been removed from the Roll of the Peerage and would no longer be used officially. This describes its removal from the roll and its official use; it should not be read as proof that every possible legal effect of the peerage was extinguished by the same instrument.
Honours
Andrew announced that he would no longer use the honours conferred on him. Buckingham Palace subsequently announced a formal process to remove honours. The available statements distinguish this sequence from the Letters Patent removing the Prince title and Royal Highness style; they do not establish that every honour was removed by that instrument or on that date.
Military affiliations, royal patronages and public duties
These public roles changed in 2022, not as part of the October–November 2025 title process. His military affiliations and royal patronages were returned to the Queen, and he was no longer to undertake public duties.

What happened to Royal Lodge?
Royal Lodge is a residence and lease matter, not a title. On 30 October 2025, Buckingham Palace said formal notice had been served to surrender the lease and that Andrew would move to alternative private accommodation. The Palace said the lease had, to that date, provided legal protection for him to continue living there. The statement describes notice and a planned move; it does not characterize the change as a title removal.
The Palace’s announcement of the Royal Lodge notice and its title process appeared in the same statement, but they are distinct actions: one concerns the lease and residence, while the other concerns titles, style and honours.
What the changes do—and do not—establish
The official and parliamentary record supports specific changes: removal of the Prince title and Royal Highness style by Letters Patent, removal of the Duke of York title from the Roll of the Peerage and its discontinuation in official use, the earlier return of public roles, and notice concerning the Royal Lodge lease. It does not establish that every conceivable legal or constitutional status was erased. The categories and mechanisms should not be collapsed into one claim that the King removed everything in a single act.
