For most people with a 4K television, buy the Roku Streaming Stick Plus. It supplies 4K playback, HDR10/10+/HLG, Bluetooth Headphone Mode, and a compact direct-to-TV design for a listed $39.99 in the current U.S. lineup. Choose the regular Roku Streaming Stick for an HD television or the lowest-cost upgrade, the Roku Streaming Stick 4K if you specifically need Dolby Vision or better wireless reach, and Roku Ultra if you want Ethernet, USB playback, Wi-Fi 6, Dolby Atmos support, or Roku’s best remote. Choose the Roku Streambar SE when improving TV sound is as important as adding Roku streaming.

This guide covers Roku’s current U.S. player lineup: the Roku Streaming Stick, Streaming Stick Plus, Streaming Stick 4K, Roku Ultra, and 4K Streambar SE. Roku’s listed prices are promotional and can change, so treat the figures below as a current comparison rather than a price guarantee.

The short version: which Roku is right for you?

  • HD television or lowest upfront cost: Roku Streaming Stick. It outputs up to 1080p HD, has a compact stick design, and includes a voice remote with TV power, volume, and mute controls.
  • Best value for most 4K televisions: Roku Streaming Stick Plus. It adds 4K resolution and HDR formats for only $10 more than the HD model at Roku’s currently listed prices.
  • Dolby Vision or a challenging Wi-Fi location: Roku Streaming Stick 4K. Its meaningful advantages over the Plus are Dolby Vision and a long-range Wi-Fi receiver.
  • Power user or home-theater setup: Roku Ultra 4850R. It is the premium set-top player with Ethernet, Wi-Fi 6, USB local playback, Dolby Atmos support, and the rechargeable, backlit Voice Remote Pro.
  • Streaming plus better built-in TV sound: Roku Streambar SE. It is a 4K Roku streamer and soundbar in one, not a faster alternative to Ultra.

Roku players compared

The table uses prices currently displayed on Roku’s U.S. player page. Roku says offers can change, and the Ultra’s listed $99.99 price is promotional compared with a $149.99 regular price.

4K Streambar SE $99.99 4K streaming 4K Roku streaming; verify the TV and content’s specific HDR compatibility Integrated soundbar; can expand to a 2.1 setup People who want streaming and improved TV audio together

A dash or omission in the table means the feature is not a headline differentiator in the current specifications used for this comparison. It should not be read as a universal statement that a model lacks every unlisted capability.

Before choosing: 4K is not the same as HDR

4K describes resolution: the player can output a picture with up to 3840 by 2160 pixels. HDR describes how compatible content handles brightness, contrast, and color. A 4K television and 4K player can produce a sharper image, but the visible improvement from HDR depends on the television, the streaming service, and the particular title.

Roku Streaming Stick HD with Voice Remote
  • HD streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
  • Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
  • No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
  • TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.

The distinction matters when comparing the Streaming Stick Plus with the Streaming Stick 4K. Both output 4K at up to 60 frames per second and support HDR10+, while the 4K model adds Dolby Vision and a long-range Wi-Fi receiver. The extra $10 is therefore not automatically buying a sharper 4K picture. It is mainly buying a different HDR format and a wireless-reception feature.

Dolby Vision also is not guaranteed simply because a player supports it. You need a television that accepts Dolby Vision and content encoded in Dolby Vision. If your TV supports only HDR10 or HDR10+, the Roku Streaming Stick Plus may provide everything your display can use. Likewise, a 4K-capable Roku cannot turn HD-only content into genuine 4K detail.

Roku Streaming Stick: the right choice for HD TVs

The regular Roku Streaming Stick is the simplest recommendation for an HD-only television. It outputs up to 1080p HD, uses a small stick that plugs into the TV, and includes a voice remote with TV power, volume, and mute controls. It is also the sensible low-cost option when 4K and HDR are irrelevant to the display.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is one important price-based qualification: Roku lists this model at $29.99 and the Streaming Stick Plus at $39.99. If the television is already 4K-capable, saving $10 by buying the HD model means giving up the reason you bought a 4K display. For an HD television, however, the regular stick avoids paying for picture capabilities the TV cannot show.

Its compact size also makes it a reasonable travel choice, provided the destination television has an available HDMI input and you have reliable internet access. The stick is not the best choice for someone building around Dolby Vision, 4K HDR, Ethernet, USB media playback, or a premium remote.

Roku Streaming Stick Plus: the best value for most 4K TVs

The Streaming Stick Plus is the mainstream recommendation because it covers the core needs of most 4K owners without moving to a large set-top box. Roku lists model 3830R with 4K output up to 60 fps, HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG support. It plugs directly into the television, is designed not to block neighboring HDMI ports, and can draw power from the TV through USB-C according to Roku’s specifications.

It also supports dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Headphone Mode. That makes it more flexible than the entry model for private listening, while retaining the unobtrusive stick form factor. The direct-plug design is particularly useful when there is little room around the TV or when a separate box would be inconvenient.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the Plus when your TV supports 4K and HDR10, HDR10+, or HLG, your wireless network is adequate, and you do not need Ethernet or USB local playback. It is not the right upgrade solely because a product listing uses the word “4K”; the Streaming Stick 4K is the more targeted step-up if Dolby Vision or wireless reach is the actual concern.

Roku Ultra, Ultimate Streaming Player - 4K Streaming Device for TV
  • Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
  • Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
  • The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
  • No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
  • Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.

Roku Streaming Stick 4K: for Dolby Vision or harder Wi-Fi locations

The Streaming Stick 4K, model 3820R2, is the more specialized stick. It supports 4K output up to 60 fps, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HLG, dual-band 802.11ac MIMO Wi-Fi, and a long-range Wi-Fi receiver.

For a typical 4K TV with good wireless coverage, the Plus may be the better value. The 4K model becomes easier to justify in two situations:

  1. Your TV supports Dolby Vision and you watch Dolby Vision content. In that case, the model can use a picture format the Plus does not list as supported.
  2. The TV is in a location where wireless reception is difficult. The long-range receiver is a genuine product differentiator, although it is not a guarantee that every home will get a faster or more stable connection. Building materials, distance, interference, and the internet connection itself still matter.

Do not buy it merely because “4K” sounds better than “4K Plus.” Both are 4K sticks; the buying decision turns on Dolby Vision and the receiver design. If the problem is poor coverage throughout the home rather than one television’s location, address the network itself with a Wi-Fi mesh system or Wi-Fi 6 router rather than assuming a new player alone will solve buffering.

Roku Ultra: the premium player for people who need its extras

Roku Ultra is a traditional set-top player rather than a stick. Roku identifies the current model as 4850R and describes it as 30% faster than any other Roku player. That percentage is Roku’s manufacturer claim, not an independent laboratory measurement, so it should be treated as a positioning claim rather than a tested benchmark.

Ultra’s practical advantages are more important than the headline speed claim. It supports 4K, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, Wi-Fi 6, Ethernet, USB local-media playback, and Bluetooth Headphone Mode. It also supports AirPlay and HomeKit, Alexa, Google Home, and Roku Smart Home compatibility according to Roku’s product information.

The included second-generation Voice Remote Pro is the most capable remote in this lineup. It has backlit buttons, a rechargeable battery, hands-free “Hey Roku” voice control, a lost-remote finder, a live-TV guide button, and quick-launch shortcuts. Roku says the box includes a USB-C charging cable and a premium high-speed HDMI cable.

Ultra makes sense when one or more of those features matters:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Ethernet: useful when you want a wired connection to the home network or the television’s Wi-Fi location is unreliable.
  • USB playback: useful if you want to play compatible local media from a USB drive rather than relying only on streaming apps.
  • Wi-Fi 6: relevant when your network also supports Wi-Fi 6 and you want the newer wireless standard on the player.
  • Remote convenience: the rechargeable battery, backlighting, hands-free voice control, and remote finder solve annoyances that the basic sticks do not target.
  • Home-theater audio: Dolby Atmos support is useful with compatible content and compatible audio equipment.

Ultra is unnecessary for a basic HD television and often unnecessary for a normal 4K setup. If your needs are simply 4K streaming and standard HDR on a television with decent Wi-Fi, the Streaming Stick Plus covers the core job at a much lower listed price.

Roku Ultra versus Ultra LT

Do not confuse the current Ultra with Ultra LT when comparing retailer listings. Roku says both support 4K, Dolby Vision, and Ethernet, but Ultra adds Dolby Atmos, Wi-Fi 6, USB, and the more capable Voice Remote Pro. Roku also says Ultra LT is sold only at Walmart. If a listing uses “Ultra” loosely, verify the model and the included remote before purchasing.

Roku Streambar SE: choose it for sound, not speed

The Streambar SE combines a 4K Roku streaming player with a soundbar. Its purpose is different from Ultra’s: it is aimed at someone who wants clearer or fuller TV audio without buying a separate soundbar and streaming player. Roku positions it as expandable to a 2.1 setup.

That makes the Streambar SE a poor apples-to-apples comparison with Roku Ultra. At the currently listed $99.99 price, Ultra is the better pure streaming choice if you need Ethernet, USB playback, Wi-Fi 6, Dolby Atmos support, or the premium remote. The Streambar SE is the better fit if the television’s built-in speakers are the immediate problem and a combined device is preferable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is also worth comparing the Streambar SE with a separate soundbar for TV and Roku player. Buyers prioritizing surround formats can also investigate a compatible Dolby Atmos soundbar, but compatibility among the TV, Roku player, soundbar, content, and connection path must be checked rather than assumed.

A needs-based buying decision

Use this sequence instead of choosing solely by price or by the word “4K” in the product name.

1. Check the television

  • If it is HD-only, choose the Roku Streaming Stick.
  • If it is 4K but does not support Dolby Vision, the Streaming Stick Plus is usually the logical value choice.
  • If it is 4K with Dolby Vision, consider the Streaming Stick 4K or Ultra depending on your networking, local-media, audio, and remote needs.
  • If you want better sound as well as streaming, consider Streambar SE before comparing processor or Wi-Fi features.

2. Check the network path

All Roku players require an internet connection, but the best connection method differs by model. The Streaming Stick Plus and Streaming Stick 4K are wireless stick designs. The 4K stick specifically adds a long-range Wi-Fi receiver. Ultra adds both Wi-Fi 6 and Ethernet, making it the clear choice when a wired connection is important.

A player with better wireless hardware cannot repair a slow internet service, an overloaded network, or a dead coverage zone. If only one TV has trouble, the Streaming Stick 4K’s receiver may be relevant. If several devices struggle in the same area, investigate the router or mesh coverage first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Check your audio equipment

For ordinary TV speakers, any of the streaming players may be sufficient for the streaming task, subject to the television’s inputs and capabilities. For a combined audio upgrade, choose Streambar SE. For a separate home-theater system, Ultra is the Roku player in this lineup that specifically lists Dolby Atmos support. Atmos still requires compatible content and compatible audio hardware; it is not guaranteed for every app, title, TV, or sound system.

Roku Streaming Stick 4K with Voice Remote - HDR10+ & Dolby Vision
  • Stunning 4K and Dolby Vision streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
  • Breathtaking picture quality: Stunningly sharp 4K picture brings out rich detail in your entertainment with four times the resolution of HD. Watch as colors pop off your screen and enjoy lifelike clarity with Dolby Vision and HDR10+.
  • Seamless streaming for any room: With Roku Streaming Stick 4K, watch your favorite entertainment on any TV in the house, even in rooms farther from your router thanks to the long-range Wi-Fi receiver.
  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
  • Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight

4. Check private-listening needs

The Streaming Stick Plus and Roku Ultra document Bluetooth Headphone Mode. If private listening is a major reason for the purchase, verify the exact Roku model’s feature list rather than assuming every Roku player supports the same headphone method. If you need replacement or dedicated listening hardware, Bluetooth headphones may be useful, but they are not a required add-on for every package.

5. Decide whether you need a set-top box

A stick is easier to hide and plugs directly into the TV. Ultra is larger but provides Ethernet, USB, and a more capable remote. Choose the box because you need those features, not because it is automatically better for every 4K display.

Do you already have a Roku TV?

If you own a Roku TV, you normally do not need a separate Roku player. A Roku player is external hardware that connects to a television through HDMI. A Roku TV already has the Roku experience built in.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An external player may still be a separate purchase for another television, but adding one to a Roku TV is not required simply to use Roku’s interface and apps. First identify whether the television itself is a Roku TV before budgeting for a streaming player.

What happened to Roku Express?

In April 2025, Roku announced that the new Streaming Stick and Streaming Stick Plus would replace the Roku Express and Roku Express 4K+ at the same introductory price points. Roku said the Express models could remain at select retailers while supplies lasted.

That means an Express or Express 4K+ listing is not automatically a bargain. Treat it as a previous-generation option and compare four things before buying:

  1. Exact model: verify whether it is Express, Express 4K+, Streaming Stick, or Streaming Stick Plus.
  2. Included remote: do not assume older and newer packages contain identical remotes or TV controls.
  3. Price: an older model should offer a meaningful saving if the newer replacement is available at the same or a similar price.
  4. Return policy: older stock may have different retailer conditions, and the supply situation can vary by store.

Setup and buying cautions

You need an HDMI-equipped television and internet

Roku players are separate HDMI devices, so the television must have an available HDMI input. You also need internet access for streaming apps and services. The player itself does not include the paid subscriptions required by some content services.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use compatible connections for 4K and HDR

4K, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos depend on the entire signal chain: the Roku model, television, content, audio equipment where applicable, and the connection requirements. If a 4K or HDR signal is not appearing, check that the TV input, content, and connected equipment support the format. Roku includes a premium high-speed HDMI cable with Ultra; if you are replacing a lost or damaged cable, a high-speed HDMI cable is a sensible troubleshooting purchase, not an automatic add-on for every buyer.

Do not overpay for unused capability

The current listed price ladder is straightforward: $29.99 for the HD Streaming Stick, $39.99 for Streaming Stick Plus, $49.99 for Streaming Stick 4K, and $99.99 for both Ultra and Streambar SE. The $10 steps between the sticks correspond to meaningful feature changes, while the jump to $99.99 buys specialized capabilities or integrated audio.

Best Value
Roku Express HD Streaming Media Player, Black (Renewed)
  • Streaming made easy: Roku Express lets you stream free, live and premium TV over the Internet—right to your TV. It’s perfect for new users, secondary TVs and easy gifting—but powerful enough for seasoned pros
  • Quick and easy setup: Just plug it into your TV with the included High Speed HDMI Cable and connect to the internet to get started
  • Tons of power, tons of fun: Compact and power-packed, you’ll stream your favorites with ease; from movies and series on Apple TV, Prime Video, Netflix, The Roku Channel, HBO, Showtime and Google Play to cable alternatives like Hulu with Live TV and PlayStation Vue, enjoy the most talked about TV across free and paid channels
  • Low cost, no extra fees: For under $30, Roku Express streaming device includes a High Speed HDMI Cable—and there’s no monthly equipment fee; with access to free TV on hundreds of channels, there’s plenty to stream without spending extra
  • Simple remote: Incredibly easy to use, this remote features shortcut buttons to popular streaming channels

That does not make Ultra or Streambar SE universally better. Ultra is a feature-rich streaming box; Streambar SE is a soundbar with streaming built in. Pick the one that solves your actual limitation.

Final buying verdict

Buy the Roku Streaming Stick Plus for the broadest combination of price, 4K support, HDR10-family compatibility, compact design, and private-listening features. Buy the Roku Streaming Stick only when the TV is HD-only or the lowest price is the priority. Spend the extra money on the Roku Streaming Stick 4K when Dolby Vision or a difficult Wi-Fi location justifies it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Move to Roku Ultra for Ethernet, USB playback, Wi-Fi 6, Dolby Atmos support, or its premium remote. Choose Streambar SE when the purchase is really about fixing weak TV sound while adding Roku streaming. And if the television is already a Roku TV, start by using its built-in Roku experience instead of automatically buying another player.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Roku Streaming Stick Plus better than the Roku Streaming Stick 4K?

Neither is best for every buyer. The Streaming Stick Plus is the better value for most 4K TVs because it supports 4K, HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG at a lower listed price. The Streaming Stick 4K adds Dolby Vision and a long-range Wi-Fi receiver, so it is the better choice when the TV and content support Dolby Vision or the installation has difficult wireless coverage.

Does a 4K Roku make HD content 4K?

No. A 4K-capable player can output compatible 4K content, but it cannot create genuine 4K detail from an HD-only movie or show. The television, streaming service, title, and connection must all support the relevant resolution and HDR format.

Should you buy Roku Ultra instead of a streaming stick?

Buy Ultra when you need Ethernet, USB local-media playback, Wi-Fi 6, Dolby Atmos support, Bluetooth Headphone Mode, or the rechargeable and backlit Voice Remote Pro. For ordinary 4K streaming over reliable Wi-Fi, the Streaming Stick Plus is generally the more economical choice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can you use a Roku player with a Roku TV?

You can connect external hardware to a Roku TV, but you normally do not need a separate Roku player because the Roku experience is already built into the television. Confirm that the television is actually a Roku TV before purchasing another device.

Are Roku Express and Express 4K+ still worth buying?

They may still appear at select retailers while supplies last, but Roku’s 2025 Streaming Stick and Streaming Stick Plus replaced them at the same introductory price points. Compare the exact model, remote, price, and return policy before choosing older stock.

The Bottom Line

Best overall value: Roku Streaming Stick Plus. Best for HD: Roku Streaming Stick. Best for Dolby Vision or difficult Wi-Fi: Roku Streaming Stick 4K. Best premium player: Roku Ultra. Best for streaming plus better TV sound: Roku Streambar SE.
