The film is Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, Quentin Tarantino’s 2019 drama starring Leonardo DiCaprio as television actor Rick Dalton and Brad Pitt as his longtime stunt double, Cliff Booth. Set in Los Angeles in 1969, it also features Margot Robbie as Sharon Tate. The “family of killers” in the headline refers to the Manson family’s place in the story’s historical context—not to Dalton and Booth, and not to a documentary account of the crimes.
What is the film?
Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood is Tarantino’s ninth film. Sony’s official film page describes a story set in 1969 Los Angeles, following Dalton and Booth as they try to find their footing in a changing film and television industry.
The Festival de Cannes record lists August 14, 2019, as the film’s release date and identifies Robbie as Tate. Sony announced the title and the DiCaprio-Pitt casting on February 28, 2018. Sony’s announcement provides that early production context.
Who are the two stars?
- Leonardo DiCaprio plays Rick Dalton, a fictional television actor whose career is changing along with the industry around him.
- Brad Pitt plays Cliff Booth, Dalton’s longtime stunt double.
The phrase “two of 2024’s biggest stars” is a headline description; the available film and festival records do not establish a ranking or explain how “biggest” was measured. Both actors are central to this film, but that headline wording should not be mistaken for a sourced 2024 accolade.

#1 Best Overall
- The 9th film from Quentin Tarantino features a large ensemble cast and multiple storylines in a tribute to the final moments of Hollywood?s golden age.
What does the Manson family have to do with the story?
The film places its fictional Hollywood story in 1969, the year of the Manson family murders, and includes real person Sharon Tate, played by Robbie. The Manson family is part of the historical backdrop signaled by the headline’s “family of killers” phrase. Dalton and Booth are fictional characters, not members of that group.
Tarantino’s film is a dramatized, alternate-history work rather than a documentary reconstruction. A 2019 TIME interview with Tarantino discusses the characters’ place in a Hollywood era coming to an end and Robbie’s portrayal of Tate. That interview offers the filmmaker’s framing, not a neutral historical account.
Rank #2
- The 9th film from Quentin Tarantino features a large ensemble cast and multiple storylines in a tribute to the final moments of Hollywood?s golden age.
Does the film prove the stars “stole the show”?
“Stole the show” is a subjective judgment, not a verifiable plot or credit fact. The official synopsis and festival record confirm the film’s premise and cast, but do not establish that one performance outshines another. Readers can take the phrase as promotional praise rather than an objective claim.
