Which Parts of Rambo Were Inspired by Audie Murphy?

Audie Murphy was a model for John Rambo, according to author David Morrell, but Rambo is a fictional Vietnam veteran—not a retelling of Murphy’s life.

Audie Murphy helped inspire John Rambo, but Rambo is not Murphy under another name. Author David Morrell has said Murphy was a model for the character, particularly in the idea of a veteran struggling to readjust to civilian life after war. The novel’s central character and setting, however, belong to the Vietnam War era—not Murphy’s World War II biography.

What David Morrell said Audie Murphy contributed

In a PBS interview, First Blood author David Morrell called Murphy “my model for the character.” He explained that Murphy had wanted to write about the difficulty of returning to peacetime after World War II, a subject Morrell connects to what is now called post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). That is the clearest stated link between Murphy and Rambo: the challenge of coming home from war.

Morrell’s author page says his essay Rambo and Me discusses Murphy as a model for Rambo. Morrell also mentions Rambo’s long hair and beard in the PBS interview, but does not say those traits came from Murphy. The connection should not be extended beyond what Morrell describes.

What is documented about Murphy—and what is not

Arlington National Cemetery’s biography records Murphy’s service with the 15th Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division, and says he first entered combat during the invasion of Sicily in July 1943. On January 26, 1945, at Holtzwihr, France, his position came under attack by German tanks and infantry. Murphy ordered his men to withdraw to better defensive positions, remained forward, and fought from a burning tank destroyer. He was wounded and continued fighting; the cemetery account says he received the Medal of Honor for this action.

By the end of World War II, Murphy had earned 28 medals, including three from France and one from Belgium, according to the cemetery biography. After the war, he experienced headaches, depression, and nightmares—symptoms the biography describes as what is now known as PTSD. His 1949 memoir, To Hell and Back, recounts his wartime experiences; he portrayed himself in the 1955 film adaptation.

These biographical details help explain why Murphy’s experience of returning from war could resonate with Morrell’s idea. They do not show that Rambo’s missions, combat episodes, or other plot events reproduce Murphy’s life. No specific Murphy episode is established as the source for a Rambo scene.

Why Rambo is still a Vietnam veteran, not a fictional Murphy

The 1972 novel First Blood introduces Rambo as a Vietnam veteran in conflict with a small-town police chief. Morrell has said that, while studying at Penn State, he met recently returned Vietnam veterans who described nightmares, insomnia, depression, relationship problems, and difficulty adjusting to civilian life. Their accounts, along with the late-1960s political and social climate—including riots and antiwar demonstrations—also shaped the novel.

Murphy served in World War II; Rambo’s fictional background is Vietnam. The influence Morrell describes is therefore thematic and creative, not a transfer of Murphy’s identity or full biography into the story.

The novel and the films are not interchangeable

Morrell has described significant differences between the novel and the 1982 film adaptation. The film changes the location, reduces the importance of police chief Teasle’s Korean War background, changes Rambo’s characterization, and gives the story a different ending. A detail from a later Rambo film should not be attributed to Murphy unless a source specifically supports that connection.

The character’s name has a separate origin: Morrell said he chose “Rambo” after hearing about a Rambo apple at a roadside stand. That account is distinct from Murphy’s influence on the character.
