Spoilers for the complete Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba manga ending follow.
Three Hashira are alive by the end of the manga: Giyu Tomioka, Sanemi Shinazugawa, and retired Hashira Tengen Uzui. However, only Giyu and Sanemi survive as active Hashira through Muzan Kibutsuji’s final battle. Tengen survives the series because he retired after the Entertainment District arc and does not fight in the Infinity Castle or Sunrise Countdown battles.
The short answer: which Hashira survive?
- Giyu Tomioka, the Water Hashira: survives Muzan’s defeat and appears at the final Hashira meeting.
- Sanemi Shinazugawa, the Wind Hashira: survives Muzan’s defeat and also appears at the final meeting.
- Tengen Uzui, the former Sound Hashira: remains alive, but he is retired and does not participate in the final battle as an active Hashira.
That is why two answers appear in different summaries. If “survive the final battle” means active Hashira who fight through the last arc, the answer is Giyu and Sanemi. If it means Hashira who are still alive by the manga’s ending, the answer is Giyu, Sanemi, and Tengen.

Giyu Tomioka: a surviving active Hashira
Giyu is one of only two active Hashira left alive after the war with Muzan. The Water Hashira enters the final confrontation after fighting through the Infinity Castle, helps oppose Akaza, and continues into the Sunrise Countdown battle against Muzan.
His survival is explicitly confirmed after the battle rather than being inferred from an ambiguous final image. In Chapter 204, Giyu is present when Kiriya Ubuyashiki convenes the remaining Hashira. The Demon Slayer Corps is then disbanded because Muzan and the demon threat have been eliminated.
Sanemi Shinazugawa: the other active survivor
Sanemi also survives the final arc. The Wind Hashira takes part in the battle against Kokushibo and then fights Muzan, enduring injuries that leave him among the very few elite demon slayers still alive at the end.
Like Giyu, Sanemi appears at the postwar Hashira meeting in Chapter 204. Their presence together is the clearest in-story confirmation that they are the only active Hashira who remain after the final battle.
Why Tengen Uzui counts as a survivor
Tengen is often left off lists of surviving Hashira because he is no longer an active member of the Corps when the final battles begin. During the Entertainment District arc, he loses an eye and an arm and decides to retire from frontline duty. He survives that battle and remains alive through Muzan’s defeat and the epilogue.
Rank #2
So Tengen should not be described as a Hashira who fights and survives the final battle. The precise wording is: Tengen is a retired Hashira who survives the series, while Giyu and Sanemi are the only active Hashira to survive Muzan’s final battle.
What Chapter 204 confirms
Chapter 204 takes place after Muzan’s defeat. Kiriya Ubuyashiki holds the final Hashira meeting, and Giyu and Sanemi are the two Hashira shown as remaining. The Demon Slayer Corps prepares to disband now that its purpose has been fulfilled.
This chapter matters because it settles the count directly. The manga does not merely leave Giyu and Sanemi’s fates open; it places them at the final meeting and identifies them as the surviving active Hashira. Tengen is alive but is not one of the active Hashira seated in that postwar scene.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDoes Chapter 205 show the surviving Hashira in modern times?
No—not as their original Taisho-era selves. Chapter 205 moves to a modern-day setting and shows descendants or reincarnated counterparts of characters from the main story. Those images should not be treated as proof that Giyu or Sanemi personally lived into the modern era.
The direct evidence for their survival comes from the immediate post-battle material, especially Chapter 204. Chapter 205 functions as an epilogue about the legacy and continuation of the characters’ lineages or identities, not as a scene showing the original Hashira surviving for decades.
