The available official announcements do not establish that either film spent two decades in development. The live-action project was announced for worldwide theatrical release in 2025, but production only began in 2026, and no release date has been announced in the sources reviewed.
Which Gundam movie is the headline referring to?
The wording most plausibly points to Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM, an animated film with an official site covering theatrical information, home video, streaming and news. But there is also a separate live-action Hollywood Gundam film. They are distinct projects, and the live-action film—not SEED FREEDOM—is the one whose recent status is described as production underway.
The two-decade development claim should not be treated as confirmed. The available official material does not provide a dated development timeline establishing that duration for either project.
What is known about the live-action Gundam film?
Bandai Namco Filmworks and Legendary announced their co-financing agreement for a live-action adaptation on February 5, 2025. Their announcement said, “The film will be released worldwide in theaters,” but did not give a release date. Bandai Namco Filmworks and Legendary announcement

Netflix Tudum reported on April 20, 2026, that filming had begun in Queensland, Australia. It named Jim Mickle as director and Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo as stars. The story was described as an original conflict between rival mech pilots on opposing sides of a war between Earth and former space colonies. Netflix Tudum production report
That production update is not a theater date. The sources cited here confirm a worldwide theatrical plan and a production start, but do not establish when the film will reach theaters.

What Bandai Namco’s Gundam sales figure does—and does not—mean
Bandai Namco’s 2026 integrated report lists fiscal-2026 Gundam series group IP sales of ¥254.3 billion, roughly ¥100 billion higher than fiscal 2025. That is a corporate-reported franchise-wide IP sales figure, not box-office revenue and not a measure of either film’s performance. The report also presents the live-action adaptation as one project leading toward Gundam’s 2029 50th anniversary, with potential to serve as an introduction for audiences new to the franchise.
