Kiribati is the first country to reach 2026, because its Line Islands—including Kiritimati—use UTC+14. The answer to which place is last depends on what “last” means: American Samoa and Niue are among the last inhabited places, while uninhabited Baker and Howland Islands at UTC−12 are the final territories in the sequence. India reaches midnight at 18:30 UTC on 31 December 2025.
Where India falls in the New Year countdown
India observes Indian Standard Time (IST), UTC+05:30. When it is 00:00 on 1 January 2026 in India, it is 18:30 UTC on 31 December 2025.
- Nepal, UTC+05:45: reaches midnight 15 minutes before India.
- India, UTC+05:30: reaches midnight at 18:30 UTC on 31 December.
- Pakistan, UTC+05:00: reaches midnight 30 minutes after India.
This is a comparison of local civil times for the 2026 transition. India and Sri Lanka share UTC+05:30 in the cited annual sequence.
Why Kiribati is first
The New Year arrives in a rolling sequence because places set their civil clocks to different offsets from UTC, with the International Date Line separating calendar dates across the Pacific. Kiribati spans more than one time zone, so it does not have a single nationwide midnight moment. Its Line Islands reach the new year first; Kiritimati, also called Christmas Island, is at UTC+14.

The government broadcaster Akashvani News (News on AIR) reported on 1 January 2026 that Kiribati’s Line Islands welcomed the year first. The country’s name is shorthand here for its first territory to reach midnight, not a claim that every part of Kiribati celebrates simultaneously.

- Among the last inhabited places: American Samoa and Niue, both at UTC−11, are among the final places where residents enter 2026.
- Last geographic locations in the sequence: Baker Island and Howland Island, at UTC−12, reach midnight later. Both are uninhabited, so there is no resident population there to celebrate.
Calling either answer simply “the last country” can be misleading: the final inhabited places and the last territories are not the same, and Baker and Howland are uninhabited islands rather than countries.

After Kiritimati at UTC+14, the sequence moves through the Chatham Islands at UTC+13:45, then New Zealand, Samoa, Tonga and other UTC+13 locations. It continues westward through successively lower offsets, reaches India at UTC+05:30, and eventually arrives at the inhabited UTC−11 places and uninhabited UTC−12 islands.
