A separate story about boyband Five is a reported anecdote in which Simon Cowell sought the song and Martin reportedly declined because it was already earmarked for Britney Spears.
Who was offered the song before Britney Spears?
| Artist | What the accounts establish | How to describe it |
|---|---|---|
| TLC | The group received an early version and declined it, according to T-Boz’s recollection reported by The Guardian. | A documented refusal. |
| Robyn | Martin offered her the song after TLC; The Guardian says nothing came of the pitch, and The New Yorker reports that she was offered it. | A pitch that did not progress; a formal rejection is not established. |
| Five | The Guardian relays a story from Tim Bower’s 2012 Simon Cowell biography: Cowell reportedly wanted the song, but Martin reportedly said it was already promised to Spears. | A separately attributed anecdote about Martin declining a request—not Five rejecting the song. |
The core TLC-to-Robyn-to-Spears sequence is reported by The Guardian’s 2018 oral history and The New Yorker. Neither account supports adding the Backstreet Boys to a list of artists who rejected the song.
Why did TLC pass?
Martin initially thought he had written an R&B song and sent an early version to TLC. T-Boz later recalled that she liked it but questioned whether it was right for the group. Her response, quoted in The Guardian’s 2018 oral history from a recollection she gave in 2013, was: “I was like: ‘I like the song but do I think it’s a hit? Do I think it’s TLC?’ … Was I going to say ‘Hit me baby one more time’? Hell no!”
The phrase was also vulnerable to a misunderstanding. The reporting says Martin and his Swedish collaborators intended “hit me” to mean “call me,” while TLC heard a literal implication of violence. Jive removed the phrase from the release title, resulting in “…Baby One More Time.” This explanation describes the writers’ intended meaning as reported in the sources; it does not make the phrase’s interpretation universal.

How did the song reach Britney Spears?
After the TLC pitch, Martin offered the song to fellow Swede Robyn, but the pitch did not turn into a recording. The sources do not establish a specific reason or a formal refusal by Robyn. Martin had composed the song with Rami Yacoub, and Jive A&R executive Steve Lunt took it to Spears as the label sought material following an earlier R&B-leaning direction that was not working.
Spears recalled liking the song because it felt different, while recognizing that no one could predict its reception. As she put it to The Guardian: “I knew it was a great song. It was different and I loved it, [but] I don’t think you can anticipate how a song is going to be received.” She recorded with Martin’s team at Cheiron Studios in Stockholm. Martin was the principal writer and producer; Yacoub was a co-composer.

What does the Five story actually say?
The Five account is not another rejected-song story. The Guardian attributes it to Tim Bower’s 2012 book Sweet Revenge: The Intimate Life of Simon Cowell: after hearing a demo, Cowell reportedly tried to secure the song for UK boyband Five, but Martin reportedly declined because it was already set aside for Spears. The Guardian presents this as a story rather than a firmly documented event and relays a claim that Cowell offered Martin a Mercedes. It should therefore remain a qualified anecdote, not be treated as proof that Five was offered the song and turned it down.

Spears’s recording transformed the song into her breakthrough single. In a 2023 anniversary retrospective, the Recording Academy reported that it debuted at No. 17 on the Billboard Hot 100, reached No. 1 for two consecutive weeks, spent 32 weeks on the chart, and attained platinum status. Those are historical performance figures as reported by the Academy, not a sales total. The Academy also says Spears received nominations for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 42nd GRAMMY Awards.

Spears later described the song’s emotional center as adolescent stress: “The whole song is about that stress that we all go through as teens,” she told The Guardian. In its 2023 report on Spears’s memoir The Woman in Me, the Associated Press said Spears wrote that Soft Cell’s “Tainted Love” directly inspired “…Baby One More Time.” That is Spears’s account as reported by AP, rather than an independently corroborated origin claim.
